Foreign workers in South Korea top 1 million


Seoul, Oct 20 (IANS): Foreign workers in South Korea total 1 million, a government report said on Thursday.

Foreigners aged over 15 in the country reached 1.425 million as of May, up 3.7 per cent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.

Among them, the economically active population surpassed 1 million for the first time at 1.005 million in May, up 1.9 per cent from the same month last year, Xinhua news agency reported.

The economically active population refers to those employed and unemployed and aged 15 or more.

Foreigners who got a job here reached 962,000 in May, up 2.6 per cent from a year ago.

The portions for Chinese and Vietnamese took up 6.6 per cent and 7.4 per cent respectively.
