Mangaluru: Sadananda Gowda’s brother dies, Hospital refuses to take old notes

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Nov 22: The demonetisation measure by the central government has not spared BJP cabinet ministers. Union minister D V Sadananda Gowda himself went to through the sad incident in city.

Bhaskar Gowda

Sadananda Gowda's brother passed away on Tuesday, November 22 at KMC hospital here. The hospital management refused to accept old currency notes from the minister when he wanted to settle the bills. The union minister was anguished with the behaviour of hospital staff.

Bhaskar Gowda, brother of former chief minister and present union minister D V Sadananda Gowda, was admitted to KMC hospital ten days ago due to jaundice. He breathed his last today without responding to treatment.

Minister DV Sadananda Gowda went to the hospital to receive the dead body of his brother but the hospital staff refused to take old currency notes for making payment for hospital bills.

Bringing to the notice of hospital staff, the guidelines by the union government to receive old currency notes in the hospitals was of no use. The hospital also refused to accept cheque. The minister anguished with it, asked the hospital staff to give in writing that they are not accepting old currency notes. The staff ultimately accepted the cheque for the payment. The minister has said that he will order for suitable action against the hospital. The incident has also angered BJP leaders.

Most of the hospitals in Mangaluru have stopped accepting old currency notes. Several protests have been held in this connection.

Going through the comments I realised that many people are not sure of the facts, first let me express my condolences to DVS Gowda s family. Now the facts- The Government order clearly allows ONLY Government Hospitals to accept the old 500 and 1000 Re notes, Private Hospitals are NOT allowed to accept the old demonetised notes, there is no ambiguity about it and the Government order is Crystal Clear, so the authorities in KMC did the right thing, the notes ceased to be legal tender on the midnight of 8/12/2016 and accepting the notes after that would have been illegal, The total bill as reported in today's Deccan Herald was 13 lakhs and an advance of 2.5 lakhs was already paid, so the balance was 10.5 lakhs. It is surprising that a former union minister for law is himself not aware of the LAW and furthermore was wanting to pay 10.5 lakhs in Cash, and in old demonetised notes, that leads to many questions such as why he wants to settle a large sum in old notes and why?

RIP Mr. Gowda. I am surprised this has become news just because he is Minister's brother. Now let our leaders know how difficult it is for common person to pay hospital bills with new notes or any other mode.

Demonetization says " Only Govt Hospitals can accept old currency " so what KMC has done in this case is correct. Management has adhered to Govt instructions. If at all they accepted old currency, they would have booked for illegal transaction & would have faced action. So Hospital has gone by the guide lines.

A lesson to be learnt from this incident is that " what does a common man, economically weak citizen do to pay hospital bill " if a minister finds it so difficult.! Let these leaders realise reality of hardships faced by us all with law they themselves BJP has brought to practice.

Almost all the hospitals in Mangalore, with few exceptions are looting the patients with heavy bills. Now they have black money. In these 60 days, they take white money, not the old notes and their accumulated black money they will turn into white... simple...(saying these are the old notes of patients during 60 days). NOW A DAYS HOSPITALS, EDUCATION CENTRES ARE PURELY BUSINESS CENTRES... (Purely because, even if there is no need of blood or ... test, they simply write....)...

Although order says that old notes of Rs.500/=and Rs.1000/=should be accepted until further notice in certain key places like hospitals, petrol pump, utility bills etc, still some are reluctant to accept the same as per the management decision. Staff cannot be blamed for this. They have to obey their boss’s order. Here no question of complaining or taking stringent action or asking for written letter from the concerned places. Rules should be everywhere same. Whether he/she is a central minister, state chief minister or any other general public/common man, Union ministers, chief ministers, MLAs, MPs.
They too must understand, realize how much common people, labourers, poor people have been suffering, undergoing all these ordeals ever since demonetization order has been announced by our honorable prime minister Narendra Modi on 08.11.2016 at 8.00 PM.Still it is not streamlined. No doubt, the historic move undertaken by the central government is very good but implications, result is very bad for the common people.
Here in this incident, one can suspect that knowingly he might have given the old notes in order to convert into white money. Who knows? Why to get annoyed? Didn’t he know? Why to grumble? Graciously he should have settled the bills by paying new notes rather than creating a scene? No man is above the law of the land.

Govt announced the old notes will be accepted in Govt hospitals only and not in private hospitals. How many people have died due to demonetization. Did Govt bother for that, how many people are taking leave or absent from work to get change the note for their daily bread. Glad that the Union Minister of Law of the glorious RSS/BJP Government, and the former CM of Karnataka got their own medicine being consumed in overdose by the innocent poor and ordinary people all across India.

PM Modi has to make a legal declaration that the hospital employees be jailed for 10 years for not accepting the old currency from the Cabinet Minister. Order the army to make a surgical strike at the hospital.

PM Modi failed to mention that the funeral homes must accept the old notes without even counting.

You are correct. The black money will be transformed to good money by the people acting like sick and entering the hospitals. PM Modi knows that trick, and so ordered the hospitals to convert the black money into white money without waiting at the long queue but through laying down at the hospital bed and watching T.V.

Even the Minister of Law has cash with him likewise in a country like India where 98% of the monetary transactions are being conducted in cash, especially in 500 and 1000 notes, the abrupt and irrational action undertaken by the disoriented minded PM will affect the whole nation in the days to come.
