Mangaluru: Bishop Aloysius distributes gifts to destitutes, helps needy construct house

Mangaluru, Dec 23: Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, bishop of Mangaluru celebrated the holy Mass for the inmates of St Anthony's Charity Institutes here on Friday December 23. He then distributed Kuswar and gifts to the inmates followed by distribution of grocery items to an HIV-affected family.

He also presented a cheque to a needy family from Pumpwell towards construction of their house.

In his Christmas message, the bishop said that the poor and needy need not feel sad or discouraged because there is no one to care for them. "On the contrary," the Bishop said, "The poor and needy are also the children of God and they are dear to Him. Jesus came into this world precisely to demonstrate this truth that God truly cares for them. Jesus has also called us His followers to reach out to the needy ones because in them He truly lives. Jesus said, 'Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me' (Mt 25:40)."

St Anthony's Charity Institutes started in 1898 at the moment is a home to 400 destitutes. The Institutes takes care of their needs with no charges. The bishop hosted lunch for the inmates to share his joy of his triple jubilee (platinum jubilee of life, golden jubilee of priesthood and two decades of Episcopal ordination). Earlier in the day, the bishop also blessed the crib prepared at the entrance of St Anthony's Ashram.

Fr Onil D'Souza, the director of the Institutes welcomed the guests and thanked them for their participation. Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu, the vicar general of the diocese; Fr Francis D'Souza, the administrator of the Institutes; Fr Peter Gonsalves, the assistant director; Marcel Monteiro and Archie Pais, the advisory committee members of the Institutes were present. Prem Kumar and his team organized the choir.

    What a magnanimous gesture on the part of Bishop Aloysius to visit the St. Anthony's Ashram in preparation of the Xmas feelings. It is the best time for the inmates of St. Anthony's Ashram to realize that the entire Diocese is with them, and they are not alone. Each and every one of us have our own ups and downs in life and we think of the lonely and the needy in our daily prayers.

    We visited St. Anthony's during October and witnessed tremendous progress throughout the area, including the nice home where the retired priests are happily settled down.

    We remember very well the Konkany theatrical performance and variety entertainment evening we celebrated at St.Anthony more than two decades ago in the presence and performance of late Wilfy Rebimbos and also in the company of Meena Rebimbos as well as Eric and Joyce Ozario. Late Fr, Miranda was the Director of the Institute, and we think Fr.Onil was the Assistant.

    God bless St.Anthony's Institute and all the priests that help the Institute to prosoper under the able guidance of Bishop Aloysius.
