Mangaluru: Week-long Karavali Utsav begins on high note at Kadri Park

Mangaluru, Dec 23: The week-long Karavali Utsav got off to a grand start here on Friday December 23 with a colouful procession that showcased the tradition and culture of Tulunadu.

The procession was flagged off by U T Khader, minister for food and civil supplies at Karavali Utsav grounds. The procession, consisting of traditional music bands, folk artistes tableaux and much more, culminated at Kadri Park where the event is being held this year.

The exhibition was inaugurated by district incharge minister B Ramanath Rai.

The event was formally inaugurated by Kalaimamani Padmashree Dr Kadri Gopalnath, international saxophone artiste.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Gopalnath said, "Our coastal area is known for its culture and art. Yakshagana, an art from this region is world famous. No matter what amount of work pressure a person may have, when he listens to music, it acts as a stress-buster. Celebrating Karavali Utsav with this kind of pomp is appreciable. Such events are essential to protect and preserve our culture. Whenever I hear about the coastal region, it reminds me of my hometown. I congradulate the organisers on organising this event in such a nice manner and thank them for giving me an opportunity to be part of this event."

B Ramanath Rai said, "Karavali Utsav was held in Karavali grounds in the past but now we are celebrating it hear in Kadri Park. From this year onwards, we are celebrating it at the taluk-level too, with a view to provide a platform to artistes from all pockets of the region. Dakshina Kannada is a district of many cultures and art forms. We the people of this district are lucky to be born here. There is a need to celebrate such events to protect and introduce our culture to the younger generation. I thank each and everyone for contributing and making this event such a success."

Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo, Mangaluru North MLA Mohiuddin Bava, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, DC Dr K G Jagadeesh and others were present.
