Udupi: Boats collide - fisherman killed near Malpe

Udupi, Dec 24: Two fishing boats collided with each other during their fishing trip in the sea on Thursday December 22. The incident occurred within the limits of Malpe port near here, in which one of the fishermen lost his life.

Devadas (50), who was piloting one of the two boats, lost his life in this tragic incident. Several other fishermen, who were injured, stand admitted into KMC Hospital at Manipal for treatment.

The boat which received most of the impact of the accident had ventured out into the sea for fishing on December 19. When it was engaged in fishing some distance away from Malpe fishing port on Thursday afternoon, another boat that was moving at considerable speed crashed into the previous boat. As a result, the boat capsized and the fishermen got tossed into the sea. The people in the other boat jumped into action and rescued the fishermen from the sea. Devadas, who had received a severe blow to his abdominal region, died in the meantime.

Fishing net, engine and some other equipment were damaged in this incident. A complaint relating to it was filed at Malpe police station.
