Mangaluru, Dec 26: A native of Thalassery in Kerala was taken into custody from the airport here on Friday December 23 on the basis of suspicions that he had 'links with ISIS', and released two days later after officials failed to find any evidence to support their suspicions. His passport, however, was impounded.

The man, identified as Munaf Rahman (41) has been conducting trade in the city since sometime. NIA had got information that Munaf was leaving the city along with family to 'join ISIS'.

Munaf had arrived at the airport for flying to a Gulf country along with wife and children on Friday when immigration officials questioned and arrested him before handing him over to officials of National Investigation Agency (NIA). NIA, which questioned Munaf, is learnt to have released him on Sunday December 25 after impounding his passport. It is said that NIA failed to get any strong evidence to support its notion that he had terror links.

As per media reports, Kerala police had issued a lookout notice for Munaf on the basis of telephonic conversations he had with some individuals with 'ISIS links'. When he came with wife and five children to the airport here at around 9 am on Friday, immigration officials took him into custody on the basis of the lookout notice, while sending his wife and children back home. He was found to be in possession of four lac rupees in cash in addition to foreign currency notes, sources said. Police sources claimed that he gave information about a person who had 'invited him to leave India and join ISIS'. It is said that Munaf had told his wife and children that they were visiting the family of his sister staying in Sharjah.

It is said that Munaf Rahman had suffered heavy losses in steel utensils business he operated at Thalassery. As he had married a girl from the city, he had started running some business here since the last four-and-a-half years. He stays with his family in an apartment complex near Old Kent Road in the city, as per information.

    To avoid suspicion, anti national elements use Mlore airport and try to mingle with the families to escape undetected. I always was suggesting to have a seperate immigration counter for passengers with other state origin PPs.

    More 100000 Muslim people go in and out of country in 3 days time perioid so you guys telling me that they all got arrested .
    NIA job is to prevent the terror act so let them do their job if he was innocent why he was talking to ISIS contact's .

    Please read the news carefully before commenting. Here NIA had to intervene because of Kerala Police had released a look out notice based on terror link. this is their duty to nail the passenger because of the notice. If they really caught him with evidence then you will give it a communal angle. right!!

    OK AGREED THAT NIA job is to prevent terror act and arrested MUNAF under look out notice, same airport ARJUN from gujarath was arrested for possession of live bullets in his pocket , why didnt NIA intervene, was he boarding to join INDIAN ARMY???.

    why there is so much of discrimination. wht dont NIA charge a terror case against him and i am sure that after couple of days he will be set free with influence of politicians.

    All you guys Blaming NIA here want to ignore the fact that it was Kerala Police first who have set out a LOOKOUT notice for this man based on his call history. So its obvious the emigration people will hold him on their first sight.

    Also he was found with 4 lac rupees. Now don't this needs some explanation ? Why or how can he take 4 lac rupees out of the country when we cant take more than ten thousand ? To start Gujiri business in GULF ? When someone on a lookout notice appears in the Airport with 4 lac rupees in cash, do you think emigration or any other authorities will confer him with Bharat ratna ?? he may not have any links as claimed, but he has to explain the 4 lc rupees, that why they may have impounded his passport.

    It is worrying and shameful that innocents are being targetted by NIA and other agencies whereas big looters / decoits are enjoying freedom. NIA officials should be questioned for this. They should not harass any one without sound proof. May be one of Mr. Munaf enemy gave incorrect information to NIA. This does nto mean to arrest him and stop him from flying abroad. Mr. Munaf should be compensated for the inhuman treatment for him and NIA officials should be penalised for doing their duty without response.

    Indeed poor and innocent Munaf should not only be compensated but also be given bravery award for carrying Rupees 4 lakhs plus foreign currency when there is scarcity of cash in the country.

    NIA not doing this first time. Their job is arresting innocents, keeping in the jail for many years and finally court ordering to release them due to lack of evidence. NIA losing its credibility and it is just assassinating the peoples' character without any reason. Supreme court must intervene in this matter and NIA should not be allowed to arrest anybody without proper evidence.

    Abdul mia, in this particular case NIA took the accused into custody based on a look out notice issued by the Kerala police, which itself was issued on the basis of his suspected communication with ISIS sympathizers. What do you expect NIA to do? Just let him go without making any inquiries? Also if NIA is on a witch-hunt, why did they release him within 2 days on account of lack of evidence?

    Also your view that NIA just arrests innocents is bit of an over stretch, since the agency has around 85% conviction rate. More or less every case handled by the NIA carries the death penalty or life-in-prison to the main accused. The burden of proof in these cases are very stringent and the case needs to be proved beyond all reasonable doubt. Then how does the agency manage a 85% conviction rate. If false witnesses and planted evidences form the basis convictions, wouldn't a shrewd defense lawyer shed them apart?

    When lalit modi left who was in power at Delhi ? More over who gave loans to mallya and who was the finance minister at the time Idbi gave 680 Crores loan within a day to a defaulting /loss making company ?

    it is the duty of the present govt to recover the loans instead of allowing them to escape ....If they are not repaying then put them in jail as it is done in the case of sahara....if the govts policy is to help the defaulters, then write off all the loans approved during UPA ....why only Mallya and Lalit Modi ?????
