Gayathri, who was perfectly well till then, complained that she was experiencing heavy head ache and giddiness. The prison officials rushed her to Wenlock hospital. She was in ICU till Thursday morning and then was shifted to a ward.

The arrests were made after a person named Yogish from Kasargod had complained that Gayathri Nayak had demanded bribe from him. Yogish had complained that Gayathri had demanded bribe from the compensation of Rs 17.5 lac he received from the government. He had already paid her Rs 1.3 lac.

It is also said that Gayathri had demanded bribe from others who had received compensation from the government. So far none of them has complained.

Gayathri Nayak was Tahasildar in Kundapur before she was made National Highways Special Land Acquisition Officer. She had additional responsibility as executive officer at Pilikula Nisargadhama for some time.

It is not known when Gayathri will be discharged from hospital. High profile accused people complaining about sickness has become common these days. In most cases, it is a plan to avoid prison and remain in the comforts of a hospital.

Bribe is demanded by Corporation officials for getting license and completion certificate for house and by MUDA for other aspects of land house purchase etc. One TPO is known to have amassed crores. Many top officials are aware of it. If you raid the homes you will find assets disporportionate to their known source. Everyone knows they demand bribe. But all are chores so no one is daring to expose them. No file moves without bribe in corporation office. Will someone expose this?

Everyday we come accross people like these. Even in Sub registrars office, no document can be registeted without coughing up. On the roads nowadays, we see open roll call by police and sales tax officials from vehicles to an extent we have never seen before.

Before, cops used to collect hafta from bars and wine shops in plain clothes. Nowadays you can see them collecting hafta in uniform. But one question always rings in our mind why no media house has exposed this and made national headlines like molestation cases.

We have often heard that the money collected as hafta and bribes has to go to upto the top level. Why no investigative journalist has exposed this in a sting operation for the benefit of society. Is it really true that every state has to send money to national party coffers as hafta and that all hafta accumulated from the ground level ends up there and subsequently into election funding?

Only the responsible media can tell us.

Open Bribe is demanded in Mangalore City Corporation when you go to get your marriage certificate done. My friend had not paid bribe initially, so he was made to run pillar to post for almost three weeks. He lost his six days' office pay. So much energy and days and time was wasted behind these incompetent bribe-eating people sitting in the corporation office.

He had no other option in the end than to pay some bribe and get the work done in 3 days.

Time to cough out all the money accumulated by her over the years! It is double pain for ordinary people to pay bribe to get their compensation after land loss! It will be apt for her to spend as many years as her employment in jail!
