Coronary stent prices slashed by 85%, lacs of heart patients to benefit

Daijiworld Media Network

Feb 15: In a major measure of relief to cardiac patients in India, the government on Tuesday February 14 fixed the ceiling price of coronary stents which are used to open up blocked arteries.

Union minister for chemicals and fertilizers, Ananth Kumar announced the slashing of rates of stents by about 85 percent, on Tuesday. The government has already included stents to the national list of essential medicines in view of increasing incidence of heart-related ailments in the country, and more and more patients being advised by cardiologists for insertion of stents. The minister said that reduction of price of stents will not affect the industry as a whole as production cost of stents is low.

This initiative has come as a relief to lacs of people hailing from poor and middle income groups who were finding it difficult to afford the cost of stents even after having been advised to go for them by the doctors.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority, in a notification, put a ceiling price on drug eluting stents (DES) and bioresorbable stents at Rs 29,600, and that of bare metal stents at Rs 7,260, effective from Tuesday. The ceiling price excludes local taxes.

The cost of a drug eluting stent currently ranges between Rs 24,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh, and that of a bioresorbable stent is between Rs 1.7 lakh to Rs 2 lakh. A bare metal stent costs between Rs 7,000 and Rs 20,000.

NPPA said it had consulted with various stakeholders on the matter.

"During deliberations, it was found that huge unethical markups are charged at each stage in the supply chain of coronary stents resulting in irrational, restrictive and exorbitant prices in a failed market system driven by information asymmetry between the patient and doctors pushing patients to financial misery," an NPPA notification said.

The NPPA also said that a stent could cost the patient over ten times more by the time it moved from the manufacturer to the patient.

In July 2016, the Union Health Ministry had, through a notification, included coronary stents under the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). Drugs and devices listed in the NLEM have to be sold at the price fixed by NPPA. This was after the Delhi High Court sought government action on a public interest litigation (PIL) appeal seeking price control on stents.

Reduction with new technology & mass production in any field is always welcome.
A precaution for those who get a diagnosis from your cardiologist is get second opinion regarding angioplasty or stent insertion as most of the times it is not required but commercial interests are the reason for that. Prevention is better than having stents which too are not guaranteed to prevent future blocks. Bioresorbable stents are latest & best as they get absorbed & no longer there to cause one more block after its target is achieved while arteries heal & stay inflated.
Diet & lifestyle changes with adequate exercise while managing diabetes are better options.
Avoid statins to reduce cholesterol if prescribed as cholesterol is not the reason for blockage but its imbalance is the symptom of underlying cause.
Statins cause heart attacks than preventing the same, its a scam of drug industry, read their side effect

Statins prevent building up of plaque in the arteries. Renowned cardiologists prescribe statins. Not everywhere people make money , there are many who really care for their patients :)

Sorry to say you are wrong & taken for a ride by scam the drug companies have created, Just ask B M Hegde about it & you will know all cholesterol is not bad, but Omega 3 is good for heart, without fat our cells are damaged, brains don't work, hormones don't get produced & those who were normal(athletes) in Lipid Profile tests died of heart attacks. Cancer or any ailments such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes are caused by Free Radical Damage which can be prevented by good healthy food or organic diet supplements having Vitamin C & E.

Stent costing 2 lak is today merely 30k.. if this is not pathbeaking what else can be? doctor fees used to be 10-20k,,. do you think doc will hike it to 2lak overnight? lets be fair.. I know it is difficult for someone to digest such good things, but then there are millions who are cheering, because till yeaterday they decided not to go for surgery, but today they have a sudden hope that it is manageable..

Afterall this decision is to do with Heart and only those who have a heart can understand what a great hope it has brought to.

It is an timely and apt dicsion the government has taken. There is big medical mafia forming a nexus of doctors and pharmaceutical companies. The cost of treatment exorbitantly high because of this nexus. That Doctors who are supposed understand the helplessness of patient shy away from being so, is a sad sate of affair. A Doctor conducts three to four angioplasty in a day, charging high rate for surgery besides earning commission from pharmaceutical companies. It is possible that when Doctors get high rates pf commission these stents may been put in patient who did not need them. And high rates of donation at medical college is no justification for amassing money. Doctors Please understand your patients weak and falling and do not pull them down quickly. Whenever possible extend that helping hand. People will simply Love you.

This price cut is a welcome decision to all Indians because of all of us are vulnerable to heart desease...

But those who live in utter frustration for a prolonged time, who don't even have an iota of appreciation for the good things happening but only curse and abuse all day, will be more vulnerable and may surely need the stent.. only then they will realize that the price cut is good decision. till then they will live in utter ignorance and give us good comedy.. LOL
