Udupi, Feb 26: An old woman who was neglected by her own people and was leading the life of an orphan alone in a secluded house since the last several years was  rescued by social activists on Friday February 24.

The woman who hails from Havanje Golikatte near here, was admitted into the district hospital. The incident turned out to be truly emotional.

Sundari Shetty, aged between 60 and 63, was found alone in a neglected state in a house where she has been living alone since many years. She does not have any children, and her husband had breathed his last several years ago. She was found to be living helplessly without even attending to cooking and household chores. Sundari has not got benefit out of any government schemes, nor is there power or water connection to her house. She had become very weak, and was found always lying down desperately. Her neighbours used to provide her food.

In the recent past however, the things turned for the worse after her health deteriorated and she  became mentally ill.  After a local, Nagaraj, contacted social worker, Nityananda Volakadu, Niyananda visited the lady's home and convinced her to accompany him. He got her admitted into the district government hospital. The lady is not even able to provide information whether the house she lives in is her own, nor is she able to recollect whether she has any relatives. It is thought that her memory would have been impaired on account of lying alone in a house without being cared for for several years.

It is said that she is related to the wife of a well-known established entrepreneur who was murdered in the town recently. The locals have requested these relatives to show humanitarian concern towards this lady in distress and take care of her.
