Udupi, Mar 8: A bull had suffered injuries four days back after a train hit it, causing it to fall down the roadside gorge on Kukkikatte railway road in the outskirts of the city. The injured bull was unable to move and its condition had turned critical as it had not consumed fodder and water for four days.

Well-known social worker, Vishu Shetty, got information about the injured bull on Tuesday evening from the members of Alevoor Yuvaka Sangha. Vishu Shetty rushed there and provided water and food to the bull. As it was dark, he decided to undertake its rescue operation the next day.

The rescue operation supported by a crane and backhoe began at around 6.30 am on Wednesday March 8. The bull was provided with preliminary treatment through veterinarian, Dr Sandeep Shetty. The operation also drew help from social worker, Krishna Ambalpady, and members of Alevoor Yuvaka Sangha.

The bull had fallen down about 60 feet down the road level. The machines could not reach there as there was no approach to this spot. The backhoe was pressed into service for creating a path for the crane to move through. The bull struggled violently because of acute pain when an effort was made to lift it with the help of a belt fitted through its midriff. As the bull faced the risk of slipping down from the crane, it was lowered after which the veterinarian administered an anesthetic to the animal. Thereafter the bull was safely brought out, at the end of an operation that lasted for about three hours.

Alevoor Yuvaka Sangha has taken over responsibility of looking after the bull henceforth. Veterinarian, Dr Sandeep Shetty, who took part in the rescue act without accepting anything in return, has also come forward to treat the animal free of cost. The backhoe used for rescuing the bull was provided by Abhinandan Sridhar Shetty without charging anything.
