Karkala, Apr 28: Illegal businesses of black, red stones, sand and timber are going on the taluk without interruption. As natural resources get stolen, crores are lost by the government by way of revenue.

Following the allegations, Karkal tahsildar Guruprasad led team conducted raids to illegal sand mining unit in Bola Barabail on Shabhavi river on April 27.

More than 40 loads of sand was found stored in two places during the raids. The sand is estimated to be worth Rs 4 lacs. The sand has been handed over to PWD.

It is said that the kingpin of the illegal mining trade is the leader of a national political party and also a former people representative.

The officials were reluctant to tell the names of the suspects. The information regarding the owners of the land where the sand was stored and who stored it there is yet to be known. Tahsildar Guruprasad said that the real picture will emerge only after investigations by Karkal rural station police.
