Mangaluru May 8: Bursting of pipes carrying drinking water has been a common phenomenon in the city particularly during summer months. There has been no let up in these incidents in which precious water goes waste. Each of these incidents result in wastage of large amounts of water, which otherwise would have been useful for people during this scorching summer. There was a pipe burst at Mullakad Kavoor ward on Sunday May 7 morning, resulting in hundreds of litres of water going waste, at a time when the city is reeling under water crisis. This was the third pipe burst case in the city within the gap of one month.

Previously on March 25 there was a pipe burst at Bondel and Kadri where large amount of water went down the drains.

Even after frequent calls and complaints, none of the officials or workers of Mangaluru city corporation (MCC) turned up to address the water pipe burst issue as it was Sunday and therefore a holiday for them. It is learnt that problems like these cannot be addressed on holidays. Same reason was put forth by MCC officials during Kadri pipe burst on March 26

The water kept on flowing for whole day on Sunday as the staff of the department stated that they can come and attend to repairs for the leakage on Monday. Even though it is being claimed that concrete measures have been undertaken to address problems during summer, these claims look good only on paper but never practiced. MCC staff are proving time and again whenever there is pipe burst that they do not care. This shows the apathy of MCC officials in tackling water shortage in the city.

It is time to react as MCC is under an obligation to ensure that the city does not face problems due to pipe bursts that are happening frequently, and they need to put a system on place so that there is a quick response to the calls especially during such instances even on holidays as the citizens are already reeling under water shortage.
