Mangaluru: Tussle for district youth Congress president's post intensifies

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 13: The election scene in Dakshina Kannada district for the posts of Youth Congress president and other office bearers has been getting new twists and hues. Although this is an internal affair of Congress party, the campaigning by opposing factions have made the election look like a street fight. Supporters of warring factions have been posting material that are either in favour of one or the other candidate or against them.

Current youth Congress president of the district, Mithun Rai, current vice president, Luqman Bantwal, and Suneeta D'Souza are fighting it out for this post. Mithun is eyeing for this post for the third time, having functioned in this position in 2011 and 2013.

Election to the post of the youth Congress district president and office bearers will be held between May 14 and 17 in eight assembly constituencies. On May 14, election will be held at the city (north), and Beltangady, Bantwal and Sullia on May 15, city and Puttur on May 16, and city (south) and Moodbidri constituencies on the last day. Result will be announced on May 18.

Although it is being claimed that the youth Congress election is an internal matter of the party and people keep talking about healthy competition, the issue has spilled into the public domain this time with Luqman complaining that supporters of Mithun Rai had attacked him. Luqman got admitted into a private hospital. Various posts for and against these two candidates are appearing in social websites.

Mithun Rai says that this election is a healthy competition and internal matter of the party. He said that victory and defeat do not count much in this election, as those who get defeated become vice presidents. He said that he is against the effort being made to give the election some new hue.

Luqman Bantwal says that party activists are seeking a change in party leadership, and that he is lending a voice to their demand. "The youth Congress activists of the party are feeling disappointed. They want change. This election will provide an answer to their demand," he added.
