Mangaluru: Following patient's death, mob assaults, abducts doctor; three arrested

Mangaluru, May 16: In a fresh case of assault on doctors, a group of around 40 people abducted a doctor and assaulted him in the early hours of Tuesday May 16, soon after a patient passed away in a private hospital at Deralakatte here.

According to sources, Dr Abhijith Shetty, assistant professor at Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital in Deralakatte, was allegedly abused, assaulted and 'dragged by a mob of 40 people from 6th floor ICU till main gate'.

The group of assaulters alleged medical negligence in the treatment of 65-year-old patient from Kinya, who passed away eight hours after his admission. The patient was reportedly admitted with extensive cellulitis and was in shock.

Hospital sources said that he passed away despite all efforts, including ventilatory support for last 3 hours.

The mob that barged into the hospital not only attacked the doctor but even the senior nurse. The assaulters included relatives of the deceased patient.

Eyewitnesses said that Dr Abhijith was bundled into a van and taken away, but his doctor collegues gave a chase till Ullal and intercepted the van. With the help of the police, Dr Abhijith was rescued and three of the abductors were apprehended.

The police have arrested the three persons identified as Asif, Naufal and Uwais. The driver of the van, identified as Ilyas, managed to escape and is said to be absconding.

Doctors gathered at Ullal police station in large numbers immediately after the incident and filed a case.

Sources also said that the mob robbed the doctor's gold chain and watch.

Ullal police are investigating.

    This is nothing but emotional reactions upon the incident of death in the family. Can we restrict the number of patient relatives in a hospital? These people come in groups and motivate each other on criminal acts if the patient dies. Firstly, do they know the menace they create in large groups for other patients, doctors, nurses and the campus itself? My sister works in neonatal department and she also is annoyed with these large relatives when a patient comes in with labor pain. If there is a complication, instead of the joy of the new life, will they take responsibility for the disturbances caused by the large family members creating havoc in a hospital with the nurses? It is happening everywhere around us in hospitals and we have no restrictions or say whatsoever.

    India needs drastic changes in medical occupation & NEET is the first step in that direction. We have lots of doctor's who entered the profession with money power and they do lots of R&D on patients who come for treatment. Around 25 years back, I went for RCT in one of the branch of famous hospital in Udupi & student there spent almost 2 months on one teeth and couldn't complete the treatment even with lots of injections. Later I went to one elderly doctor who had been practicing since many years who told me to remove the teeth and I thought of taking second opinion and I went to the main hospital of the same hospital which I visited the first time. There one more student could complete the treatment & put the crown since the teeth was almost dead.

    As our country is advancing, our mindsets have remained same or become worse.
    How could anyone say that the admitted patient would live or die. So many instances around us we see daily, young people dying, middle aged people dying apparently looking healthy. When the time comes people have to go.

    These bunch of idiots, all 40 of them must be arrested and booked under goondagiri charges and jailed for a year to teach lesson and deter other idiots joining /doing similar idiotic acts

    Authorities must act swiftly and set an example here.

    Root canals may be treated in one or multiple visits. While few root canals can be treated in one visit, there are exceptions of extremely infected teeth and complex cases. Teeth with multiple roots and canals and teeth with very small canals may take several visits. Teeth that are extremely infected may take several visits as the infection will need to be controlled for the root canal to be a success. Your dentist should have an idea about the number of visits it will take to complete your root canal, despite of RCT being just a ‘blind’ procedure! It looks like there was a ‘communication gap’ between you as a patient and the person who was treating you as a ‘doctor’! A physician or a dentist must ‘talk’ to the patient and explain the problem as well as the procedure. I personally feel that ‘honesty’ and ‘interest’ towards profession scores over mere scoring 100% marks! Communication with the patient is essential as most of the patients come with ‘half-baked knowledge’ about certain aliments either though internet, social media or believing words of relatives or friends!
    Similar to your case, where you found yourself in an unsatisfied state, Deralakatte hospital incident was also blown out because those forty ‘less-educated’ or ‘less informed’ attendants of the patients failed to understand the doctor’s efforts.
    Yes, NEET can eliminate the possibility of those poor candidates who try to enter medical field by paying money. But dentistry or surgery is a combination of ‘art and science’, where ‘skill’ is more important than scoring 100 marks in theory examinations. Since I had the privilege of studying in two different great institutions of costal Karnataka, I can confidently tell that education provided and health care offered in Dakshina Kannada are the ‘ best’ in the country!
    Assaulting or kidnapping a doctor will never cure a disease, but will complicate the trust built in health care system. Hope the authorities take firm action against the culprits, which will definitely built positive relation between a doctor and a patient.

    Thanks doctor for your lengthy reply. I too condemn abducting & assault on the doctor.
    I had a cavity at the center of tooth and I came to know that it needs RCT after going to the hospital. The communication between me & student (& also student's instructor) which I can remember now is only "Aaa madi". About RCT I must have learned while they were talking to each other. I'm not good in this filed and all I learned is by listening to them while the instructor was talking to the student. After the procedure I became like the saying "old patient is better than the new doctor". As far as I remember they were giving anesthesia & other injections with straight & bent needle, but I was still feeling the pain. There was no pain when the instructor used to do the procedure while teaching & the instructor used to get angry after hearing that I have pain even with anesthesia. The last time I visited the first hospital the student pricked at the center of the tooth with RCT needle and I jumped out of the chair like anything & I never went there again. Slowly puss started forming at the jaw area and I used to remove it by myself since it was paining. At last the puss stopped and I went to the other doctor's as explained earlier.

    Here students who are interested in getting into Advanced Placement like Engineering, Medicine, Robotics start preparing for higher studies from 7th grade itself. They are one grade ahead of their peers in Maths. And they keep taking tests in high school to get into these fields. People who do are not in this stream & cannot pass the test are not enrolled into higher studies even if they have millions of dollars. They get selected to the best colleges depending on how they perform in these tests and extracurricular activities like sports, music are also considered. The fees, financial assistance and loan is depending on the financial status of the people supporting the student. I believe it's not right to admit a student with just 50% marks and then charge them heavy fees.

    If you aren't satisfied, you could have gone to the specific dentist clinic and you could have done ur RCT there....... . You can't compare one small procedure with one big incident that could take someone's life. You are being kiddish..... If you are going to teaching hospital, there will be students and even those students are doctors and everyone learns from mistake and grow even if it is a famous doc, even a popular good art skilled doc was at the same level of student before.
    Tell me if you have never made a mistake in life........... If say you've not then that would be complete absurd comment.
    If ur teeth was infected they have to remove it cause they wanna save ur life..... Do you know an infected teeth can lead to infective carditis...... They are doing their job don't complain on things, you could have tried to get ur treatment with the respective staff if you had said so, you can't clap with one hand.

    Imagine a situation: you are with a barber to cut your hair and he has cut halfway through and you're not satisfied. Will you go to one more barber with your hair only half cut. Whether it's minor or major it's not proper to experiment on human beings; dummies should be used instead. Also the name of the hospital needs to clearly mention that it's a teaching hospital and prior information needs to be provided to patients that they will be treated with students. Do you think anyone would like to be treated with a student? Even in such a case the instructor and the hospital is fully responsible and the instructor or a qualified doctor needs to continue in case student is unable to perform. Also making a mistake in life and operating on a patient are two different things. Also I already said that I did not have pain while instructor was operating .

    This is called simply making trouble,for nothing.In the first place they bring patient late when complications started,and later make a big drama out of it.Why this?would the patient get out and start walking.It is in Indian hospitals ,any amount of visiters,relatives guests are allowed.In future make a point thatonly one or two will be allowed ,to avoid such mob.

    I personally was there in the hospital. The drama went for more than 45 minutes. Surprisingly, police came almost 15 mins after the Dr.was abducted. Few of the employees were also of openion that, if such things would happened in nitte, force of police would have reached in moment. I request the officer in charge of the district should be sensitive to such matters where a lot of patients from different parts of states come for treatment should not differentiate that way, and give protection to people and Doctor. There were more than 20 people manhandling the Dr. PL refer the CCTV and bring the culprit to account.

    The day we all born living in this world for death. It is an open secret but many of us from many religion not willing to accept it. Money, luxurious life, high profile status, beautiful girls/boys around, and that we look. If any Doctors can save or give life then why we need God? Doctors are only human beings who can obey God's plan, but it is 100% God' wish. Of course, we must try to save the life but if we failed that is not an announce fault, but it is God's wish. Stop blaming others but pray for the person soul.

    Hope the arrested persons need good treatment, fair punishment, and must make sure they will never repeat this again. Hope hospital management will support the staff members.

    This is a case of Heart disease with severe sepsis and the outcome in this case is bad. I feel the doctor is being necessarily attacked here. it appears prima facie that the Doctor was good here. I feel there is no negligence here. It is sad that Doctors are getting attacked this way. If this happens again and again the morale of Doctors will be low and people will suffer. Doctors must be respected and should be allowed to work freely without tension. If every act of a Doctor is questioned it will be hard for Doctors to practice medicine. I feel the health ministry the police all should provide good security to Doctors. Otherwise things are going to difficult for doctors to work in modern day society. Health is a importnat issue of ny society and we all must allow doctors to work without tension. In my opnion all Doctors whom I had interaction were nice people. I feel Doctors in general are good people and work hard for betterment of people. All Doctors are good in my opinion. What had happend in Derelakatte is a bad thing and hope such thing should not happen. The criminals who kidnapped the innocent Doctor must be punished so that no one repeat such acts ever again, I feel t tendency of attacking doctors must end , I request the genetral public not to attack a Doctor. Doctor profession is a noble profession and they must be respected. Unless this happens it will be hard to practice for Doctors in case of emergnecy. We must not be harsh towards doctors who work hard for the benefit of the people. I know of many Doctors who work so hard for the benefit of their patients. They ignore themselves for the benefit of patients. Unless the polce force takes strict preventive measurs against violence form patient party the Doctors will be demoralised. Such attacks must stop. I am feeling very sad as what happend to this hard working Doctor Dr Shetty. He in my opinion working very hard for the benecfit of the patient here. How ever he was attacked and this is sad incident.

    there are shortage of doctors in india. Indian students studied medical undergraduates and PG's in USA/UK/GERMANY not recognised by indian medical commission. Commission want indian students study only in Indian medical colleges by paying double the fee comparing to foreign countries. Therefore indian students who aspirant to be doctor doctors unable to pay indian private colleges fee have become victims under india's political-corporates nexus

    As per my sources this patient was about 65 years old ,had Heart disease ( IHD ) already and on the top of that severely infected Cellulitis which could go to Septic shock.
    Doctor has put in all efforts to save his life
    It is shameful that Doctor was assaulted .Strict punishment should be given to those brutes
    Prevention; As soon as the patient is admitted his relatives should be explained about the serious ness of the case and should be told any time he may die and if they want to take any where else you can take there .Simultaneously start treating the patient .
    I used to work as Physician at ICU .The first thing I used to say the above lines then start treatment .

    Medical College Hospitals should have some safeguards against students / interns looking into patients...so many students buy their seats through loads of money..they get into mbbs through money, md through money and some of them become 'professors' in these money based educational institutions..

    emergency cases hould be monitored by panel of doctors and not one doctor....

    again patients too aged or too young should be given conservative treatments....

    Why you are bothered about Money taken
    MCI has put strict guidelines if a student doesn't get minimum 50% of Marks in 12th He cannot enter MBBS even if he pays 10 crores of Rupees and to study MBBS you need not get 95% marks in 12th Std .After entering into MBBS you should learn things properly .MBBS examination is monitored by MCI and it has been proven beyond doubt that Indian MBBS Doctors are best in the world .Many of Indian MBBS ,MD doctors are working in USA and UK where they have proved that Indian Drs are best whether they studied in Private or Govt medical college .Please remove your bad opinion about Drs .Studying MBBS is not a cake walk .You need to study 12 hours a day ,toil in Bedside clinics .Smell dead boy ,Smell bad odour of pus ,blood and stool .Not just sit in front of PC and pass nasty comments about Drs .Withhold your temper

    As per my personal experience without targeting anyone, Doctors are in a commercial trend now. Wasting patients money fr treatment which they know which won't be successful. Poor medical students and handing over the MD learning doctors the patients itself shoes the mentality of present hospitals in Mangalore. Are we humans experimenting box? I am not commenting on what happened in this incident nor do I say what was the consequence is right but what I have gone through, one cannot trust any doctor without taking a second or a third opinion.

    Its sad to see such things happening. With such incidents occurring every where I'm sure our younger generation will never want to beCome doctors. One should understand that a doctor is not god and can't guarantee 100% success in what ever he does. After all we are also human and we give our best to help our fellows . I would like to reply to Royce Bantwal. If u have experienced something bad doesn't mean that the doctor tried to do something bad to you. Every doctor has his own way of treating patients and it is your right as a patient to get second or third opinion.

    Negligence can sometiems occur in medical practice. If there is negligence it must be questioned but no innocent doctor must be punished. Common negligent areas in medicine are 1) delay in intiating treatment 2) Treatment decided by junior conusltants with out senior consultant physically not being there 3) Inadequate facilities at Hopsital 3) charging money without proper indications 4) inadeauate facilities etc This case however appears there is no negligence The treating Doctor was simply roughed up and kidnapped Luckily for him he was rescued by the collgeues I feel very sad when a good doctor is attacked for no reason

    Deaths due to medical negligence r definitely on the rise because of poor quality graduates coming out of dubious medical colleges! Recently, there was a news report that quality of medical education has degraded to lowest levels that MBBS grads r not capable of suturing simple wounds or laying cast plaster, hence they have decided to have a standardized exit exam for all passed med grads to maintain quality!!

    In my family, we have have had the misfortune of two very clear med negligence deaths in the recent past!

    Problem here, unlike US, it is almost impossible to prove a med negligence case against a doc! So we r literally at their mercy!!

    Whatever the circumstances, nobody has got the right to attack a doc on duty, highly condemnable act indeed!!

    Hospitals in general have become a commercial undertaking. Gone are the days when hospitals was a place where, patient would get treatment as a human being and not as guinea pigs. Current private hospitals hire doctors on the basis of how much billing they provide and based on their billing, their salaries are fixed. This trend creates very bad precedent to charge patient heavily. The motto of doctors changes to, how much to get from a patient and how long to retain a patient in ICU or such sections, were they can charge them the most with little regard to actually treating the patient. Let me make it clear, there are exceptions. I have come across doctors who believe in service and humanity and I have come across doctors who have been blatantly commercial.

    I whole heartedly condemn any man-handling of any person - be it a doctor or a nurse. The culprits must be punished severely. I also request the doctors and hospitals to be more human. Service should come first and not money. Recently, I came across a situation where the hospital demanded the settlement on death, an amount exceeding 3 Lakhs to be paid in cash at 6 pm. How do you expect that to be done? The result, the body was left lying (not in the morgue) for more than 4 hours till the relatives ran around collecting money and settling the bill in cash as the hospital refused to accept payment by cheque. Only after settling the bill, the hospital allowed to move the body after 4 hours. Imagine the pain the relatives had to go through staring at a body which was fully covered and slowly setting in to rot!

    It is up to the doctors and hospitals to bring back the confidence people had in them and, it may not happen in India as money plays a major role and not the service.

    Yes its true medicine and health care has become a business. Doctors and managements think only of revenue and nothing else. But at the same time no one has the right to abduct a doctor and torture him. This is a very sad trend . This patient had severe sepsis and was in shock . DOctors did their best here including ventilation and all other measures The patient unofrtunately died not due to the doctors fault but due to his disease. The culprits who cmitted this criem must be arrested and punished in such a way that no one will ever do this again in future. This kind of incidences will only demoralise teh doctors and many will suffer if no action is taken. The police and health ministry must take this incident very seriously and punish the guilty.

    We got the information that only 8 to 10 people were involved int he issue as they got frustrated over death of patient. It will happen to any one . However, they should not have mishandled the Doctor. At the same it is false allegation that mob of more than 40 people attacked the doctor. This is complete incorrect and just a rumour by some hate mongers who are looking for a chance to defame certain people for their political benefit.

    Kidnapping + assaulting the Doctor is not acceptable. However, i doubt about robbery issue. I think this is purposely added only to blame the mob. Luckily mob is not blamed for destroying hospital property like breaking computer / machines etc. Few politicians and hate mongers will take the opportunity to get appreciation by blaming the mob for severe attack on doctor though he was not beaten.

    Well no negligence is intentional. And there is nothing hard and fast in medical field, everything is situational.
    I adviced my relatives not to join medicine as its less rewarding and as per current situation we have no gurantee of getting good life. They all r enjoying their lives. Money is not much different than doctors earn.

    Thosr who are talented chose not to join clinical branch due to these problmes, overwork, 42 hrs duties, no proper accomodation, eating or sleeping facility.

    Also our health sector is to blame. Too many private colleagues no proper training lack of good government setups.

    Murder needs motive plus act. Negligence is different from murder. It may maximally amount to culpable homicide if you forget to do necessary intervention but not murder.

    A normal delivery doesn't need to have gyenecologists presence all time. Plus an assistant is equally qualified to do delivery if it's normal. As per Indian health sector, at PHC a dai is capable enough to do normal delivery and her kit only has 7 to 8 things. cardiologist is not needed to manage a case of angina unless it's an acute MI who needs and able to afford in stent in right setup. Forgoing a medical equipment is definitely negligence. But these are very very rare occasions. Most of the time some things are deliberately kept inside like stents or tubes, they always have a chance of getting complicated. So don't try to judge things in which you are not expert.

    Doctors lives are at risk. Most doctors are genuine and hard working. This was a old man of 65years with severe sepsis and ischemis heart disease, The out come in such cases is generally poor. Its sad that doctors were attacked here for no reason. If people start attacking doctors for everything then no one will have courage to treat cases and most doctors will refuse to take risk. I am feeling very sad at the way a doctor was abducted here and tortured by the patient bystander. There should be good security for doctors at hospitals Otherwise doctors cant work at peace. I request all management to provide good security for doctors by the way of strong security force. This doctor was dragged from 6th fllor to goround floor and then whisked away in car. Luckily his collegeues chased the car and released him Otherwise who knows what would have happend? They coudl have even killed the doctor or held him as hostage for moeny etc. Its a very scary incident for doctors. Let there be good police protection for doctors at all major hospitals. Otherwise Dcotros morale will be on the decline in coming years. The police the management and public should undersatnd the difficulties of doctors.

    There is no question that Medicine is now become an industry and doctors are always thinking of money. But no body can physically abuse a doctor They can always sue them in court and settlethe issues. But physically dragging a doctor then kidnapping him etc are not good things to happen.

    Nasir, I agree with you. My diabetic mother had developed pain in her leg finger. One of the doctors in Mangalore advised us to get her admitted and finger to be amputated immediately. However, my conscience did not agree for it. Since I know an Orthopedic surgeon in Mumbai, I took her to him. By God's grace, only with medication her finger was healed and now since 3 years, no complain at all. Many doctors (not all), have no time for proper investigation, but, simply cut, stitch and issue bill to patients. Trying to recover money donated to medical seat.

    Really there is some severe problem. Now Ullal is a latest addition into Bhatkal and Kasargod clan . I could recall of an incident that took place few months back where a large crowd gathered outside Bhatkal railway station after they were told about misbehavior from a railway TC with group of women who were traveling from Mangalore in a sleeper class without the reservation. In today’s incident they didn’t even spare a senior nurse. It means they can misbehave with any woman.

    It is believed in medical feild moral support works better than clinical support. What I have noticed is that there is no room for counseling for immediate relatives. Explanation to the loved ones will reduce such incidences

    I am taking this opportunity to express my feelings. In one hospital when sister was admitted in ICU I was not allowed to visit her. One person is allowed in the evening that too five minutes. All those doctors know that a loved one holding hand and talking to critical or coma patient can make them feel better. We are under their mercy. Also I came to know even young children are dying in ICU mother's are allowed. It will a 100% wrong. Administrative department should visit once any other country to learn. A mother has no barrier to her dying kids no matter how big they are

    Icu is the place where critically I'll patients are taken care off, it is an area which should be free from organisms, therefore only closest of the patient bystander is allowed in, if you go & sit there holding hands then organisms from you will spread to the patient, also even to other patients around, your body can fight the organisms as your immune system is alert, but patients who are debilitating with other disease already will die bcz of sepsis by organisms from your clothes, hands, or your cough droplets. So don't talk nonsense without knowing the facts.
    If you think holding hands will heal then keep the patient at home & try.

    Wonder how many who abducted the doctor were the patient's relatives or well wishers and actually cared for the patient. These people just need a reason to vent out their frustration. No civic sense and morality whatsoever. They should be punished severely (which is unlikely to bring a change in them) for attacking the doctor and the nurse - very, very disturbing and just not tolerable. These guys bring shame to their families who have to bear the brunt of their acts.

    Most uncivilized idiots to beat assaulted a doctor and then abducting him. Also, they attacked a senior nurse. Those who attacked and assaulted the doctor and nurse should be severely dealt with. These were a similar case last couple of days back. where a doctor and staff were attacked after a patient died. How can doctors, nurses and other staff work in such condition?

    And I request all patient relatives to be human, understand that the doctor is also a human and not god and not assault doctor/kidnap doctors.
    This incident has happened at Yenepoya medical college hospital which provides subsidised treatment to patients which means the said doctor and the hospital must be treating the patient at half or quarter of their actual professional charges only to get assaulted return.
    This entitlement behaviour typically come when there is too much of 'Bhagya' schemes. People will realise the value of something only when they are made to pay for it.

    When demand decreases, the money around admission and fees too will decrease. MBBS will be honoured only to deserving candidates and will not be available for purchase.

    I don't say doctors 'kill' the patient.
    But don't you think a death of a patient caused by a doctor's negligence or by his incompetency amounts to murder?
    We have gynecologists who accept n number of pregnant ladies in their clinics, but will leave the delivery to assistants if the time is at night!!
    We have doctors who forger scissors inside the abdomen of the patient. We have cardiologists who will come and see the admitted patient only in the morning even in case the patient has an attack by night.
    Doctor's profession has lost all its respect now.

    Well, negligence is to be proven in court.Beating up someone is an "assault".A criminal offence.Is it solution for negligence?
    The reason doctors are too busy to attend night calls or emergencies once in a while is because they have too many patients.Doctor patient ratio is very low.our population needs many more doctors than what we have now.And people like you think that lesser doctors, the merrier? Situation will deteriorate further.Employing competent assistant is not a crime..& last of all don't go to a doctor who is too busy to be at your beck & call.It's your choice.
