Bengaluru, May 30: The police stopped various organisations including Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and SFI which had planned to hold the protest against the illegal sale of cattle and cow slaughter ban imposed by the central government, by way of holding Beef Fest opposite town hall here on Monday, May 29.

A few activists of DYFI entered the area from the direction of Raveendra Kalakshetra at around 6 pm on Monday and tried to rush towards town hall. They also raised slogans claiming that choice of food is their right, and condemning the government for snatching away right to food of minorities.

Activists of pro-Hindu organisations who had gathered at the spot in advance in considerable numbers, raised counter slogans. They supported the decision of the government and condemned the attitude of neglecting sentiments of the majority.

When slogans raised by both the sides intensified, police arrested all the activists and led them to the ground of city armed reserve police force. Central division deputy commissioner of police, Chandragupta, said that permission was sought to hold a protest at the spot on Monday evening and that the office of the assistant police commissioner at Halsur Gate had rejected permission. However, activists of organisations had been claiming since Sunday through social websites that they had obtained permission for the protest.

Hundreds of police personnel were present in advance to foil the protest. Earlier in the day, some BJP leaders had met city police commissioner, Praveen Sood, and requested him not to permit holding of Beef Fest as planned.
