Bengaluru, Jun 1: Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered payment of Rs 22 lac as compensation and interest to the family of a software engineer, who it concluded, died because of unscientific road hump. The order has been passed against the city civic authority, city traffic police, and urban development department.

A person named G M Chavan had approached the commission, alleging that the death of his son, Sooryaprakash G Chavan (22), who was a software engineer, was caused on February 23, 2008 due to a road accident which happened on account of a road hump that was built unscientifically. The commission, headed by Justice B S Indrakala, which conducted hearing into this complaint, came to the conclusion that all the three departments stated above were responsible for this lapse. It ordered payment of compensation amounting to Rs 12.7 lac to the family of the youth along with 8 percent interest amounting to Rs 9.14 lac within eight weeks.

The commission pointed out that road humps are created under the advice of police and urban development departments and that it is the responsibility of these departments to ensure that the general public do not face any problems or inconveniences on account of the humps.
