Chikkamagaluru, Jun 6 (DHNS):Three Maoists in the Malnad region returned to the mainstream on Monday. They appeared before the police and the state-appointed committee to implement the policy to encourage left-wing extremists to give up arms.
The surrendered ultras are Kanyakumari alias Suvarna (31) of Haluvalli in Mudigere taluk, Chennamma alias Suma (32) of Gadag and Shivu alias Jnanadev (31) from Bengaluru. Kanyakumari and Shivu are married to each other and have a six-month-old son, said Superintendent of Police K Annamalai.
He told reporters there are 33 cases against Kanyakumari — 15 in Chikkamagaluru district, 17 in Udupi and one in Shivamogga district.
The government had announced an reward of Rs 5 lakh for informers on the whereabouts of Kanyakumari. She comes under category ‘A’ of the state’s surrender policy. She will be remanded in judicial custody.
There are no cases against Shivu. However, he was a Maoist sympathiser. He comes under category ‘B’. Chennamma has been acquitted in all the three cases against her. Shivu and Chennamma will be released after the surrender process is complete, he said.
The SP said 10 Maoists had surrendered in the past in the state.
As per the state’s left wing extremism surrender and rehabilitation policy, Maoists who have given up arms get Rs 5 lakh each to support their rehabilitation. They can also purchase land and undergo skill development training.
Annamalai said Maoists should come to the mainstream of the society by emulating those who have surrendered.
The district administration has given priority to providing basic facilities like electricity, water, healthcare in Maoist-infested areas.
