Udupi, Jun 12: A newly constructed rehabilitation centre for destitute was inaugurated by district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj on Sunday, June 11.

The building is located at Beedinagudde, here and the centre has been built at a cost of Rs 40 lac under Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana and National Rural Livelihood Mission.

The aim of the project is to uplift the urban poor folk by enhancing sustainable livelihood opportunities through skill development. The municipal council of Udupi took the initiative to build the centre.

Addressing the gathering, minister Madhwaraj said, “The rehabilitation centre has been built to provide care for homeless, deprived, orphan children, physically challenged and other needy. We have tried to provide enough facilities to the inmates in the building other than beds, nets and food. It is difficult to get funds from the state government for its maintenance. So we will search for suitable NGOs to take care of this centre. This centre will serve the needy and poor with love and care.”

“The building consists of fundamental facilities like water, bathroom, toilet, electricity, first aid kit, mosquito nets and kitchen. It will have an attached room for taking care of children. To the right of the building, a long hall is constructed with a capacity of seating 48 people. 34 men and 14 women can be accommodated in the building at once. Soon other facilities will be accommodated and partition will be made as per the conveniences.”

“The other objective of the centre is to make the inmates skilled in their interested fields and make them independent so that they get job security like pension, ICDS and other services in future,” he added.

CMC commissioner Manjunathayya, president Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje, nominated member Janardhan Bhandarkar, councillor P Yuvaraj and others were present.

Regarding sand and dredging at Baje dam, Madhwaraj said, “There is legal objection on CRZ from the Mining and Geology department to extract sand in the zone. When the water level at Baje dam goes down, the concerned department will start dredging work this monsoon. I will be meeting with the fishery department and experts from TEGMA.
Experts will be sent to scrutinize the spot where dredging will take place. Based on the report, the work will be initiated in one year.”

Giving a scathing statement against K Raghupati Bhat, he said, “I cannot change or object the decision of the cabinet on denotification. As he is a BJP leader, he can meet leaders in central government and convince them to reject this proposal.”
