Mangaluru, Jun 13: Sumell, the choral singing group, in association with Mandd Sobhann, organised a 3-day residential choral singing workshop, at Kalaangann, from June 9 to 11. The concluding ceremony of the same was held on Sunday evening, June 11.

Renowned music composer, singer and choir master, Melwyn Peris, distributed certificates to the participants of the workshop. Chief trainer of the workshop, eminent musicologist, conductor, Kurian Varkey, Bengaluru distributed certificates to the participants of the 'dance workshop' that was held on May 26, 27 and 28.

Two participants - Rochelle D’Sa and Agnelo Fernandes, Goa shared their experiences of the choral workshop.

47 singing enthusiasts from in and around Mangalore and also from Goa had registered in this camp, which was symbolically inaugurated on June 9 by Kurian Varkey, by unveiling a gramophone that was covered with an earthen pot having musical notations on it.

In the 3-day workshop, Kurian Varkey gave the participants exhaustive information on the history of music, singing techniques, music notation, breathing exercises, sound production, harmony, warm-up, tone, performance and range.

Each theory session was followed by practical exercises and choral practices. Sangeet Guru Joel Pereira and Anil Patrao assisted Kurian Varkey during the training sessions. The participants then presented three songs that they learnt during the workshop.

Raina Sequeira proposed the vote of thanks and Irine Rebello, secretary of Sumell compered the closing ceremony.

Eric Ozario, workshop director, Louis J Pinto, president, Mandd Sobhann, and Avil D’Cruz, leader, Nach Sobhann, were present on occasion.
