Gunman kills 1, injures 6 in New York hospital shooting

New York, Jul 1 (IANS): A doctor opened fire inside a New York City hospital where he used to work, killing one and wounding six others before turning the gun on himself, law enforcement officials said.

Police officers found the gunman, identified as Henry Bello, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 17th floor of Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, New York City Police Commissioner James O'Neill said on Friday.

Forty five-year-old Bello, who was wearing a white lab coat, was armed with an assualt rifle besides carrying ID. The body of a woman was found close to the gunman's body, CNN reported.

Six persons were wounded, of which five are in serious condition and are "fighting for their lives", O'Neill said, adding that several of the wounded were doctors at the hospital.

The hospital's fire alarm system went off during the siege, apparently because the shooter tried to set himself on fire, the Police Commissioner said.

So far authorities have not offered a motive. The FBI said the shooting did not appear to be an act of terrorism. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called it an act of work-related violence.

The shooting began at 2.50 p.m. (local time) at the 120-year-old hospital, which claims nearly 1,000 beds spread across multiple units. Its emergency room is among the busiest in New York City.

Police went floor by floor searching for the shooter while the hospital had been surrounded by emergency response vehicles.

A 'red alert' went off within the hospital, which was placed on lockdown. Doctors and nurses barricaded themselves within.

"I barricaded the door with an IV machine, two chairs and my whole bed," a 23-year-old patient said.

It's tough to know exactly how many guns we have in the USA. Most estimates of the number of guns in the U.S. use federal tallies of the firearms manufactured, imported and exported by U.S. gunmakers. A 2012 Congressional Research Service report published exactly one month before the Sandy Hook school shooting put the number of civilian firearms at 242 million in 1996, 259 million in 2000, and 310 million as of 2009.
If that 310 million number is correct, It marked the first time that the number of firearms in circulation surpassed the total U.S. population.
If the shooters were White Americans. Just like the killing in Anders Breivik in Norway when he shot dead 77 persons. What is similar is that in all the cases, there was initial hysteria on TV channels and usage of words like, 'terror attack can't be ruled out'.'White supremacist', 'insane gunman' or 'Temple shooter' but why not Terrorist: Media must de-link religion with Terror, see all abominable acts alike
But as soon as the identity of the perpetrator was known, new expressions were coined for them. Breivik, who had a large cache of arms and ammunition and went on a firing spree, was later arrested and follow up stories described him as 'Madman' or 'Insane', more often, as 'Delusional Shooter'.
This happens in India as well. When an incident occurs, the immediate reports say, 'Cops don't rule out terror angle'.
Governments and media fail to understand that use of word 'Terror' creates a scare. This is what the enemies of humanity want. Shouldn't we get rid of it and stop scare? Every incident of crime should be condemned but shouldn't there be similar criteria. Words and terminologies surely have impact.
We have heard the adage, 'Show me the Face and I'll show you the rule'. Is it now, 'Tell me the person's identity and we will dub him terrorist or a gunman'?. Should every incident be seen from the same prism, forever!
Mass killings are always Terrorism: Why use softer terms or new labels?

It is sad but surprising why a doctor went on a shooting spree at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York City. He killed one woman and himself. I wish a speedy recovery of those injured and fighting for their lives.
