Narendra Modi has ushered in a golden age for BJP: US think tank

Washington, Aug 4 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ushered in a golden age for the BJP as the party made a comeback to power in Bihar after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar relegated coalition partner Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) to the Opposition last week, notes a top Indian-American think-tank.

"The upheaval is only the latest signal that the BJP is the new centre of political gravity in a country long controlled by the storied Nehru-Gandhi dynasty of Congress Party," Milan Vaishnav, director and senior fellow of South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said in an op-ed yesterday.

The BJP not only occupies prime position for the country's next general election, scheduled for 2019, but it is also moving at "breakneck speed" to cement its hold over powerful state governments, he wrote.

"Although the BJP government's gathering strength, signals policy stability and political consolidation, it simultaneously raises concerns about the health of India's democratic checks and balances," Vaishnav said.

Touting his business-friendly policies, nationalist rhetoric, and an aspirational appeal that struck a chord with a young and increasingly restless India, Modi led his party to a historic electoral rout, he said.

"Securing the first single-party parliamentary majority in three decades, Modi has ushered in a golden age for the BJP," he wrote in his op-ed.

Noting that the BJP's momentum has opened up "unprecedented opportunities" for the party, Vaishnav wrote, in the longer term, the addition of Bihar will hasten the arrival of the BJP's majority in the upper house, whose members are indirectly elected by India's state legislatures; this could materialise as soon as late 2018.

"With control of both legislative chambers, the BJP can push through its legislative agenda with few impediments," the Carnegie scholar wrote.

At the same time, he warned that this concentration of power also has its downside.

"The BJP, which has rapidly centralised authority under Modi and party president Amit Shah, would do well to heed the lessons of the past," Vaishnav said.

This is an era of Disaster for India as far as huge unemployment, widely spread throughout the country increasing cases of lynching of people only suspected of carrying beef by communal fanatic mobs with the ruling party looking the other way and/or giving only lip service and token gestures of dealing with such criminals is concerned. Corruption still rampant in BJP ruled states at so many levels. Control of institutions and several media by the ruling party to target opposition members only and stifle dissent with threats of raids.
BJP ruling party remembers to clamp down on corruption only in states where non BJP or non BJP ally governments are ruling and only when elections are round the corner. Corruption among their own and their supporters is conveniently overlooked. One example is Janardhan Reddy who was reported to have spent around 500 crore rupees for his daughter's wedding that too during the demonetisation period under the BJP government but no inquiry, no raid, no investigation, why ??? Golden era ??? Seriously ??? ROFL .

For 10 years UPA was in power with ED, CBI, IT under their control, they were even ruling so many states. How many BJP leaders did they book for corruption? What did they recover? How many cases have they filed against BJP leaders? They were too busy doing 2G scam, Coal scam, Adarsh scam, Chopper scam, CWG scam etc and lost elections at the end

The UPA government followed democratic and legal process and did not use bullying and dictatorial methods to suppress the opposition or stifle the voice of dissent or control and manipulate the media and institutions like ITD and ED. Even when raids were conducted due process of law was followed. However now violations of law and statutes are taking place left and right, one example is bringing in CRPF without prior information to the State government and then forcibly taking signature from DKS's mother on a letter which she is unable to understand (language) in which letter she is made to state that she has not been harassed by IT authorities . Further, DKS has not been allowed access to his legal team to complain whether his rights are being violated or not. During UPA rule there was no wide spread lynching in the name of cow protection by communal fanatics. Any way communals won't understand as cow is more important than human lives or human rights.
One question - why don't communal so called gau rakshaks travel abroad to beef eating countries in the west like the US, Europe, Brazil or China & Australia where beef is had and try lynching over there ? Is it that only Indian cows are sacred and the cows in other nations are not sacred ???

Declan, why are you so much concerned about DKS? He is a powerful man, a cabinet minister, if he is not guilty he should be able to defend himself. As far UPA is concerned the least said about it is the best. We all know about their misdeeds.Didnt they raid DMK chief s house the next day of leaving UPA? Didn't they try to fix Modi in 2002 riots case ? Didn't they try to fix Amit Shah in fake encounter case? Didn't the CBI change the report of SIT on coal scam on the insistence of law minister Ashwini Kumar who later resigned?

Coming to the point is CRPF if state govt gets to know that DKS is getting raided u think DKS wouldn't come to know??? When ministers can control state police wt the point is taking state police to raid a minister???

India worships cow so they want to protect them. Other countries dont worship cow so they kill n eat. Try not to hurt a other religion when one religion worships that...
