Kundapur, Aug 10: The Kundapur additional district and sessions court on Thursday August 10 awarded life imprisonment to a man for murdering a home-alone elderly man in Navunda in March last year.

Judge Prakash Khanderi pronounced Narasimha Naika (46) guilty of murdering Madhava Poojary on March 18, 2016, in a state of drunken stupor. The incident took place at Paduvai in Navunda.

The court conducted speedy trial in the case, questioning 20 persons during the course of the hearing. After examining all evidences, statements of witnesses and other details, the court sentenced Narasimha to life imprisonment under IPC Sec 392 and also ordered him to pay a penalty of Rs 40,000. Failure to pay the fine would attract another year of imprisonment.

The victim Madhava Poojary was living alone in his house at Paduvai in Navunda for three years, until he was murdered on March 18, 2016. The murder came to light when his daughter and son-in-law, who live in Chamarajanagar, came down to visit him and found the door locked from the inside. On breaking open the door, they found the Poojary lying lifeless.

Narasimha attacked Poojary in the early hours of March 18 with the intention to rob him. After committing the crime and taking away whatever he could lay his hands on, he locked the front door of the house from the inside and escaped from the backdoor, through which he had initally gained entry into the house. A critically injured Poojary bled to death on the spot.

Narasimha took away a gold finger ring, a gold chain, Poojary's mobile phone and other items, and hid them all in a hole at a short distance from the house.

Within three days of the crime coming to light, the police led by the then SP of Udupi Annamalai succeeded in nabbing Narasimha. The court too did not waste time and ensured a speedy trial.

Advocate Harishchandra Udyavar was the public prosecutor in the case. He took over the case from his predecessor Srinivas Hegde.

March, 18, 2016 and today August 10th 2017. Within one year 5 months convict has been given life imprisonment. Great court system. Only in Karnataka this can happen. Else it will take decades for the court to judge. My only concern is, he ruined Madhava Poojary's life. Why he should be set free after 14 years?
