22 commuters killed in Mumbai stampede

Mumbai, Sep 29 (IANS): In a Dussehra-eve tragedy, at least 22 commuters were killed in a stampede on a narrow railway footover bridge connecting the Parel-Elphinstone Road stations of Western Railway here on Friday morning, officials said.

At least 24 others were injured, six of them critically, and casualty figures could rise, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Disaster Control said.

The victims were shifted to the KEM Hospital in Parel.

The cause of the stampede was not known, but witnesses claimed that a sudden rumour of a suspected electrical short-circuit sparked off a panic run.

The bridge was already overcrowded owing to sudden heavy rains that lashed the city on Friday and many commuters had taken shelter there.

Before the rescue teams arrived, cab drivers and others helped shift the injured in taxis and on two-wheelers.

The tragedy occurred shortly before Railway Minister Piyush Goyal reached Mumbai on Friday to launch scores of new services for the Western Railway and Central Railway.

Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, who visited the scene, said it was the responsibility of the Western Railway authorities to ensure commuters' safety.

The festival-eve calamity sparked off angry reactions on social media, with many questioning lapses vis-a-vis safety and security of commuters even as projects like Bullet Trains are announced with fanfare.

Very, very sad and tragic incident. May the souls of all the departed commuters rest in peace. May all those who have been injured recover fully at the earliest.

Hope this unfortunate incident will be an eye-opener to the (callous) Govt. and railway authorities. Hope no more innocent lives will have to be sacrificed (for no fault of the commuters).

Bullet train AND the Stampede that happened today has no connection . But why the Maharashtra Government is spending so many crores for Bullet train when our local Mumbaikars travelling in suburban local trains are suffering so much. Why the Maharashtra Government instead of solving the problems of our own house, they are gaining the name by helping the neighbours to grow in plenty. Why can't they spend that money in the improvement of trains, tracks, bridges, stations. Who will give them the brains? Mindset is only on moneymaking and corruption. Modi is only roaming around - as it was his dream to see the world before dying. No outcome yet from any of the trips.

Everybody is blaming a particular party as they are against this Party. But there should not be blame game and the current Government has to take necessary action. We have to blame both the govt Congress and BJP who where ruling Maharashtra.Politicians are least bothered especially about Mumbai people as they know whatever tragedy happens in Mumbai the people within seconds put these things back and start moving/working.The people are not like other states they will call for bandh and start violence and close the city for several days or for months as they know the value of life is very precious and time is very important it runs like anything. The Mumbai people move on .....that spirit is taken for granted by these both Congress and BJP and other party politicians.

One should appreciate the work he has started which was taken into consideration by the earlier Govt.but they have not started it
Modi atleast takes the most importance to start the work and giving a time frame to the projects.BJP govt has not scrapped any good projects started by earlier govt like what Congress does by scrapping all the earlier govts initiatives.BJP govt PM is smart enough to continue the projects by fine policing it implementing it.
In 70 yes there is no electricity in some places of India but he has given much importance to these segment.Ex-PM Atalji had approved the expanding and creating of NH's but when UPA came to power till now the highway projects have not completed.
Common people should understand when one govt starts any projects when they are in power and when its getting completed the new govt comes to power and they inaugurate it and they put their name on the marble stating that as if they have done this project.People tend to forget who has started this project and which govt has taken initiative to complete the project. This is human tendency.

It is very much connected to Feku, Fadnavis, Rogi & Goyal. Instead I will say one step further -as long as Chaiwala GOBERMENT rule India, there will be tragedies waiting for the general public because they are the one who choose highly communal people. Just recall your memory that where those things happened? Hundreds of children death in UP. Train derailment in UP & Bihar. Flood Fury in Assam, Avalanches in Arunachal, Again flood Fury in Maharashtra Mumbai & Guj-rat. No doubt it is the JUSTICE from above.

It is such a tragic incident you link to Modi ? What about the stampeded that killed during Ramzan ration distribution
Rumors and rumors I just saw TV immediately after the incident many TV Channels also showed that Bridge collapsed .That news is enough to create stampede
We are Indians we rush to our work ,Rush to our home so much stressed that is the basic cause .
I was in Mumbai Airport during the recent monsoon havoc that cancelled 180 flights .Even Aeroplane flyers also same type .They took the Airindia ground staff ,Officers to task .Hurling abuses ,What happened to our flight etc etc .
My flight to Hyderabad was at 8 Pm .Indicator was not showing gate no till 12.30 midnight .I just browsed the internet went to airsewa.gov.in .There suddenly at 1 am saw that 1.08am flight is departing to Hyderabad. We about 17 people straight away asked the Manager flight has just left now at 1:15 am .He said yes We asked get our boarding pass changed for morning 6;15 am flight .He immediately said yes done .We 17 people were sent back to check in counter were given fresh boarding pass .We could fly at 6.15 am flight
Many those who were not having tolerance lost that opportunity
Dont blame Govt for every thing be a responsible citizen first

those who connect Bullet train project to this... how stupid you people you are.... there are accidents on the road... does that stopped you buying vehicles like bike or car and drive on roads... did you stop driving... lot of people are shelter less... did that stopped you people from building nice houses or bungalows... ? No right... so let's not connect these stuffs. It's an accident happened... yes. must be the negligence of the railway department, stupidity of some evil creatures of society who sparkled the rumour of electric short circuit... of some anti Modi or Piyush Ghoyal took out their frustration by doing this... or mistake by the crowd itself... nobody knows... but don't connect it to Modi , Piyush or Bullet train...

Bullet trains travellers will be the rich and elite class poor and middle class will definitely afford to travel in it, but Mumbai locals million travel by it to earn their living, the stampede happened on a bridge which is narrow and British era bridge which was left as in what conditions though the population of Mumbai has grown hundred fold, if government want to hype by getting bullet train its fine but at the Same time government has to take care of the poor too.

Extremely sad to learn this very tragic incident...
Rumour of any emergency is the last thing one must resort to...
Potential danger posed by the narrow bridge was highlighted time and again by citizens...
Can not blame a single party for this long ignored issue...
Unfortunaley Mumbaikar has no choice but to take the same route again...
RIP to the deceased... Sincere wish and prayer for the injured to recover soon...

    Extremely sad !
This is the plight of common man. 100 year old infrastructure.
Even when Commuting population has grown 1000 fold.
Even Animals are carried in a better conditions than in those crowded Trains.
Respective Govt are only announcing new projects and let the existing infrastructure die without any improvement.
Not even level crossings are replaced with Road Over Bridges in Mumbai suburbs, to improve frequency of Trains.
    Whom should the people complain?
