'Govt Considering Giving Classical Status to Telugu, Kannada'

New Delhi, Jun 20: The government is considering granting classical language status to Telugu and Kannada, Tourism and culture Minister Ambika Soni said on Thursday.

The matter was raised during the meeting between Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Rajasekhara Reddy and Soni.

She said that a committee of experts is examining the issue of granting classical language status to Telugu and Kannada.

The Minister said the majority of the experts have formed a view on the matter and efforts are being made to arrive at a consensus on the issue.

Expressing hope that the committee will reach a decision on the subject shortly, she said once such a decision is received, it will be forwarded to the government for necessary action.

Both the leaders also discussed matters related to tourism and culture sectors in Andhra Pradesh.
