Aarushi Murder: CBI Cautious in Detaining Suspects

New Delhi, Jun 26: Accused of illegally detaining Krishna, the medical assistant of slain teenager Aarushi's dentist father Rajesh Talwar, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now treading a line of caution in detaining two domestic helps in connection with the Noida double murder.

Raj Kumar, the domestic help of Anita Durani, and Vijay Mandal, who worked with Talwars' neighbours, are being detained, questioned and released by the CBI periodically.

"Kumar and Mandal are being questioned regarding their involvement in the murders. They are being detained for 22 hours and then released for a few hours, during which their movements are being monitored," a CBI official said.

As per the law, a person detained has to be produced in the court within 24 hours of his captivity.

The CBI has been questioning Kumar for over a week now. Mandal is also being quizzed for the last four days.

The CBI, which took over the case on June 1 after a public outcry over the manner in which the Noida police handled the probe, has not yet been able to locate the weapon used in the double murders or establish the motive for the crime.

The premier investigating agency has also not revealed the role of Kumar and Mandal in the twin murders.

Aarushi, 14, was found murdered in her parents' Jal Vayu Vihar apartment in suburban Noida on May 16. The police initially named the family domestic help Hemraj as the prime suspect, but backtracked when his body was found on the terrace of the apartment the next day.

The police arrested Rajesh Talwar on May 23, saying he had killed the two as he was opposed to the close ties between Aarushi and Hemraj and also because she knew about his extra-marital relationship with a colleague, Anita Durani.

The agency arrested Krishna on June 13, saying he had confessed to his involvement in the murders.

Earlier, the CBI had detained Krishna and questioned him. He was arrested formally to conduct a narco-analysis test in Bangalore following a hue and cry from his family.
