Man dies after getting sucked into MRI machine in Mumbai hospital

Mumbai, Jan 28 (Agencies): A 32-year-old man lost his life on Saturday evening after he was sucked into a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine in the hospital.

An FIR was registered against doctor Siddhant Shah, ward boy Vitthal Chavan and a lady ward attendant Sunita Surve under Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Harish Solanki, the brother-in-law of the victim Rajesh Maru, said that Maru had gone to visit Solanki's mother who was admitted in the hospital.

“He went there to visit my ailing mother but we did not know he would meet such a fate. We all are in shock. A ward boy told him to carry an oxygen cylinder with him to MRI room which is prohibited. It all happened because of the carelessness of hospital's doctors and administration. No security guard was either present to tell him that he should not carry oxygen cylinder with him to MRI room,” he added.

Solanki further said the MRI machine was functioning when Maru was called in.

“As he entered the room the MRI machine sucked him in due to the magnetic force as he had oxygen cylinder with him. He died within 2 minutes. No hospital authority has approached us accepting their mistake,” he stated.

The body has been sent for the post mortem in JJ Hospital.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the victim.

CCTV footage of the incident was handed over to the police by hospital authorities and further investigations are underway.

We are at the mercy of hospital staff once we are inside a hospital for any checkup. God forbid nobody should face such a situation when it's all over in a fraction of a second. Death is unpredictable but human negligence not acceptable.

His relative Mr Harish Solanki said that as soon as Rajesh Maru entered with the oxygen cylinder, it turned out that the MRI machine was 'on', contrary to what the ward boy said. Even the Doctor and the technician present did not say anything probably assuming the machine was off. The metal in the cylinder activated the machine's monstrous magnetic field, pulling in both the man and the cylinder with great force, as reported by people there. Rajesh's hand got stuck in the machine along with the cylinder, triggering a massive oxygen leak.

Mr Harish Solanki and the ward boys managed to pull Rajesh out of the machine but his body was swollen and he was bleeding heavily. He was rushed to the emergency ward where he died within 10 minutes.

This is not the problem of the MRI machine, but negligence of radiologist n allied staff in not observing the strict protocol of not allowing a single metallic object inside the room or it will act as a deadly flying missile!!

This is not the first time. Two employees of the Tata Memorial Hospital in Navi Mumbai suffered serious injuries when one of them walked into an MRI room with an oxygen cylinder in 2014. General Electric paid Rs 1 crore in settlement for the technician who was paralyzed.

The same sort of accident had happened at TMH ,Navi mumbai four years ago. It is sad that people working in the hospital have not been made aware of the risks involved in going near an MRI machine with a metallic object.
