Bantwal, May 11: Congress leader K Sanjeeva Poojary and his wife were attacked allegedly by BJP activists here on Thursday night, May 10. He is a close aide of district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai.
Sanjeeva Poojary, a Billawa leader is president of Bantwal election campaign committee of Congress. He is also the president of Brahmashri Narayana Guru Mandira.
The incident occurred near Marnabail in Melkar when the miscreants entered Poojary's house and attacked him, his wife and his employees. Poojary has sustained severe injuries in the attack.
The miscreants also damaged the car. Poojary had returned home after completing election campaign work for Bantwal Congress candidate B Ramanath Rai. When his employees were returning after dropping him home, the miscreants thrashed everyone inside the car black and blue. They also entered Poojary's house and escaped after attacking the family.
Along with Poojary, his staff Shankara, Ammi and Iqbal have sustained injuries in the attack.
Soon after the incident was reported, Ramanath Rai, local leaders and party workers rushed to his house and shifted him to Thumbay Hospital.
Additional SP Sujith, Bantwal rural station officer Akshay, circle inspector Prakash, PSI Chandrashekar and Shrikanth Shetty have visited the spot and are further investigating.
The Congress leaders have suspected the role of BJP leader Shrikanth Shetty and his supporters in the attack. Four separate complaints have been registered in this regard.
Earlier on Thursday afternoon some of the BJP party workers had created ruckus over four liquor bottles being carried in a car alleging that it was being taken to Sanjeeva Poojary's house. The video of the immoral rowdism had gone viral on social media inviting criticism from all corners.
The police are investigating whether the same group was involved in both the incidents.
The election commission and the district police have beefed up security in the area since it is already declared as one of the sensitive region.
