The investigating officials had also kept track of the case of murder of researcher and writer, M M Kalburgi. Sources say that the person now taken into custody by the police has also been a suspect in Kalburgi murder case apart from Gauri Lankesh killing. It is said that when Naveen Kumar was taken to Gujarat for narco analysis test, he refused to undergo it at the last minute and requested that he be spared of the test. He had then shared some additional information with the investigators. Based on this information, the accused was taken into custody as soon as he landed here from a neighbouring state, sources stated.
Some sources claim that the person now taken into custody happens to be the one who introduced the killers and instructed Naveen Kumar to train them in use of firearms, but the SIT officials are refusing confirm this information. The officials have been saying that they had questioned many based on information they come across during the probe, and several of them were sent away after getting information. They added that close vigil has been kept on some persons, while some more have left the country. The officials say that they do not consider anyone as suspect until they get concrete information about their direct or indirect involvement with the case.
