Puttur, May 14: The incident in which Umesh (30), an auto driver from Kenya in Aittoor village, who runs his three-wheeler in Mardhala, was attacked by a gang on Sunday May 13 afternoon was a rowdy sheeter, as per information. Umesh was chased by a gang with four to five members including a woman. The gang had left him seriously injured with a sharp weapon at Nekkithadka near Mardhala.
Umesh suffered deep injuries in his back and waist. He was admitted into a private hospital in Mangaluru and his condition continues to be serious, it is gathered. Past enmity is said to be the reason for this attack.
A gang which came in a red colour Maruti Alto vehicle followed the auto rickshaw driven by Umesh and intercepted his vehicle near Bachinadi Cross, Nekkithadka. Umesh left his vehicle and began to run on the road towards Mardhala but the gang chased him and hit him with a sharp weapon near the Dargah at Nekkithadka. He fell into the roadside drain, and the attackers fled, leaving him bleeding profusely.
Additional superintendent of police, Sajit, deputy superintendent of police from here, Srinivas, rural police circle inspector here, Gopal Naik, Kadaba police sub-inspector, Prakash Devadiga, and other staff visited the spot and collected evidences and details.
Umesh, who was named as an accused in a rape case which happened at Aittoor two years back, had been released on bail. It is said that he had visited the house of Kiran, a relative of the complainant in the case, at Shishila in Beltangady taluk, where she currently lives, two months ago. Umesh is said to have posedn death threat to family members of the lady. It is said that Kiran was not at home at the time. Kiran, who too happens to be a rowdy sheeter, and the mother of the victim of the above incident, who already nursed hatred towards Umesh, reportedly launched murderous assault on Umesh, it is said.
