Yeddyurappa resignation: It's victory of democracy, says Congress

Bengaluru, May 19 (IANS): Soon after Karnataka Chief Minister B.S Yeddyurappa announced to resign before the floor test on Saturday in the assembly, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad described it as the "victory of democracy".

The Congress leader also thanked the MLAs of his party and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), and the two Independents for standing by the decision of the party leaderships.

Azad said that JD-S leader H.D. Kumaraswamy will soon stake the claim to form the government in state.

"We thank the MLAs of Congress, JD-S, one BSP candidate and Independents, who resisted all sorts of temptation and arm-twisting by the Central government and its agencies, and stood by the decision taken by their party leaderships," Azad told the media outside the Karnataka Assembly.

He alleged that some of the Congress legislators were kidnapped and they were under illegal custiody of the BJP. "And as and when they got the opportunity to reach the assembly, they stood by the party. None of our members -- be from the Congress, JD-S or Independent, defected," he said.

He also said that the Congress along with the JD-S and two Independent MLAs has 117 MLAs as against 104 of the BJP.

The Rajya Sabha MP also thanked the Supreme Court for rising to the occasion.

"I would also like to thank the judiciary... The Supreme Court, who once again rose to the occasion and brought the date from 15 days to two and half days as the Governor had given two weeks time to the CM of Karnataka to break our parties."

Slamming Karnataka Governor Vajubhai R. Vala, Azad said: "He had given time for horse trading. But when we approached the SC, they found no reason why the should BJP be given 14-15 days to prove the majority when they have the numbers.

"If they have the numbers, they should produce before the assembly and win the vote of confidence. But the Governor knew that the BJP does not have the numbers, therefore, he wanted to give the BJP and the Central government a long rope...to break MLAs," he said.

Azad also alleged that the party has the recordings of the BJP leaders making offers to the Congress MLAs.

"We have recordings. A large number of our MLAs have recordings of warning the BJP leaders including the CM (Yeddyurappa) and some agencies who approached our leaders and tried to lure all kinds of money and position," he said.

"But our MLAs rejected uprightly all those offers by the Central and state governments and the BJP. So it's a victory of democracy, Constitution of India and the rule of law," he said.

The Congress leader said: "And, now we are waiting keenly that the Governor will invite Kumaraswamy to form the government."

Thief minister became a cheap minister just for 2 days.
Shame on BJP for giving Yeddy the CM candidature.
Our PMs profile is affected, Amit Shah cannot show his face, he and modi gave hopes to Yeddy, that is why Yeddy was jumping.
Modi & Amit Shah slowly washed hands and kept Yeddy embarrassed.

Exactly, that's the drama of Shah and our PM to end poor Yeddi career easy way. These used poor people with money for votes against oath on Dharmasthala (a great adorable God's place in Karnataka) Temple and got better votes. But God knows well, who do not have any religion but has the authority as "Creator". So neither appease minorities nor misguide Hindus by swearing on God, who cannot be cheated. Yeddi or Sidda or Kumara are our people, we need them all but not the others who poke their nose in our affairs.

Although, wasn’t it common knowledge that a pre-poll Congress-JD(S) alliance can defeat the BJP in Karnataka? An alliance similar to the one Nitish and Lalu forged in 2015 in Bihar.
In Gorakhpur and Phulpur, the alliance of Akhilesh and Mayawati proved that if the opposition parties unite against the BJP, then the saffron party can be beaten even in its own bastion.

But, Congress’ ‘ego’ cost them Karnataka, just like it cost them Bihar and UP.

Granted, if they’d entered a pre-poll alliance they would have had to give certain seats to JD(S) and come up with a formula for the distribution of cabinet posts. But at least they wouldn’t have had to give up the chief minister’s post.

But no, they stuck with, “We are Congress. We will stay empty-handed if it satisfies our ego!”

If the Congress party doesn’t give up this attitude, then they may suffer the same fate in every Assembly election where regional parties play a key role.

An NCP-Congress alliance is possible in Maharashtra, but what about a TDP-Congress alliance in Andhra Pradesh? Can Congress give Chandrababu Naidu the assurance that they will follow him if he takes charge in the elections?

It’s not wise to wait till your house is on fire to start digging a well — especially, for those who pride themselves on being a 130-year-old party and claim to be the largest party in the country.

Mr.Rahul Gandhi's temple visit not going to help. But ideological thinking needed.

The Governor should also resign as he has no moral right to continue.

It would be better to discard EVM's in the future like the Greatest Democracy USA has done in reverting to use of Ballot Papers as this will ensure a free and fair elections and the Will of the people will Prevail.

I hope those Disagrees are not from 'Christians'. I studied till PUC in Christian institutions. I saw absolutely no discrimination except that during two periods a week (i think, or only once a week) they had 'religion' class and same time we had 'moral science' class. Discipline was impartial.

The BJP did not factor in the SC judges - they did not expect to be called to prove majority in the open within 24 hours!!! they had it coming - here is hoping that this the beginning of a great fall of the BJP nation-wide to oblivion.

This is the first time since 2014 the old grand party is taken the election so seriously. If the party is still have some strength it should challenge Goa, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Bihar in the Supreme Court were convention and constitution norms are violated by the RSS leaned Governor's.
