Mangaluru, May 21: Heavy rain with storm and thunder that poured on the early morning of Sunday, May 20, in some parts of the Dakshina Kannada district has caused extensive damage in many places. Dwaja Sthambas (Kodi Mara) of two Daivasthanas have been broken and hundreds of trees and electrical poles have fallen to the ground because of the strong winds.
The Dwajasthamba of Shibaroor Kodamanithaya Daivasthana broke and fell on the Daivasthana itself causing damage to the Kalasha of the Daivasthana. Similarly, the Dwajasthamba of Shree Saranthaya Garodi Uliya Daivasthana at Sasihitlu under Haleyangady gram panchayat limits also got damaged due to the winds.
In addition, destruction of property is reported from several places in the taluks of Mangaluru, Puttur and Sullia.
Two houses damaged at Suratkal
The houses of Girija Poojarthi and Kaveri near Mallamar beach of Suratkal got damaged as a huge pine tree fell exactly in the middle portion of both the houses. The loss is estimated at Rs one lac. In the same locality, three electric poles got uprooted and power supply was interrupted. Mescom personnel got into action and cleared the fallen electric poles.
Havoc at Baikampady industrial area
Vehicular movement was affected on Jokatte road near the Baikampady industrial area as a tree fell on the road. A tanker, which was parked near J R Store in the industrial area, got crushed under a huge tree. The driver of the tanker escaped miraculously.
Several trees got uprooted in and around Moodbidri and electricity was affected because of this. A house near Gowri temple got damaged. An old lady who used to sleep in this house got saved as she did not sleep in the house that night.
Passengers to Mangaluru International Airport face difficulty
Passengers travelling to Mangaluru international airport had to face hardship between 3.45 am to 6 am as a huge tree fell on national highway 67 near Maravoor junction. Three electric poles also got broken when the same tree fell on them also. Rubber and arecanut farms under Paduperar gram panchayat limits near Bajpe also incurred severe damage due to the gushing wind.
150 electric poles get uprooted in Sullia
Around 150 electric poles and several trees got uprooted in and around the taluk of Sullia for the high-speed wind and rain that lashed on the late night of Saturday, May 19. The work of reinstalling the uprooted and broken electric poles is in progress and the electricity might be restored only on Monday, May 21. Several arecanut trees have also fallen to the ground. Cement sheet of Samudaya hospital blew off due to the high velocity of the wind.
The school at Kandrappadi near Devachalla village got damaged due to the lightning. The wall and roof of the school also got cracked due to the impact of the velocity of the wind. Electrical appliances of the school got completely charred in the incident.
