Worst air disaster in Mangaluru airport completes eight years

Mangaluru, May 22: Today brings back nightmarish memories of the air crash in the international airport here which had happened on May 22, 2010. On that fateful day, an Air India Express flight from Dubai had overshot the runway at 6.05 am in which 158 persons had died.

A total of 166 passengers including 135 adults, 19 children, four babies and six aircraft personnel were travelling by the ill-fated flight.

Several bodies could not be identified as they were mutilated beyond recognition on that day.

At the spot in Thannirbavi where these bodies were mass cremated, a park has come up. On Tuesday morning, a programme of paying tributes to the people who died in the air crash is being held by Dakshina Kannada district administration, officials of the airport and general public at the said spot.

    IF WE FOLLOW TRAFFIC RULES ACCIDENT NEVER HAPPENS. IT IS TRUE...AND MOST OF THE REASON FOR ACCIDENTS IS CARELESSNESS.
    NO ONE IS DOING ACCIDENT PURPOSELY. AN UNPLANNED AND AN UNEXPECTED EVENT IS CALLED AN ACCIDENT

    MOST OF THE AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD ARE CONSTRUCTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT RUNWAYS STARTS AND ENDS WHERE THERE IS SEA OR RIVER NEARBY.THIS DISASTER ALSO COULD HAVE AVOIDED IF THE AIRPORT WAS NEAR THE SEA. IN MUMBAI I SAW IMMEDIETELY AFTER TAKEOFF PLANE IS OVER THE ARABIAN SEA.

    U follow rules and instructions, you are safe. Runway with sea on either sides is not a safety net for anyone.
    As regards Mumbai runway the sea you see will be after gaining an altitude of of at least 2000 feet. So you can calculate your survival chances & if the aircraft overshoots the runway you end up on western expressway highway.
    So just chill.

    All occurred because of negligence and haughty pilots error. For dependent it is a non recoverable loss

    I lost one of my close friend and his family in this accident.
    I have met many other who have lost their family members.
    What I found is the bitter truth of life. Over the years, the grief vanishes but the greed establishes. It is all about the compensations in the discussions in the recent years.

    If you are not aware about the international air act (Montreal convention) and about airlines dirty behavior - please abstain from such comments.
    If the supreme court verdict comes in favor of dependents, then all country's must comply with Montreal Convention strict liability act.
    Only Few members are tying their best effort by engaging INDIA'S top most lawyer for supreme courts interpretation .
    If you have guts support lelse be at one corner.

    What Ivar has mentioned is the bitter truth and nothing to do with the Montreal convention or Warsaw Convention. Yes, over the years grief turns into greed....everyone fights for their share in the compensation defending their close or far relationship....It's a total airline liability to settle in SDR what they have agreed in the Montreal convention act 2003 under article 17.

    In the wake of this disaster, one WONDERS if there has been any marked steps taken to prevent such recurrence in-the-near-future and the percentages. I really wonder (I think it is more worse than ever) the close shaves innocent passengers have had in the past and whether airlines are serious enough in avoiding such episodes or SIMPLY passing on the buck onto others to save their skin, as is the normal Indian norms.

    Easier said than done.
    Hope you understand the enormous costs it would incur, not to mention taking over thousands of acres of land and uprooting hundreds of families from their ancestral homes. The Navi Mumbai International airport is still having problems in acquiring land.
    And where is the guarantee that there wont be any accidents at this new airport if it is ever built. Most accidents are results of human error, carelessness and also due to natural weather conditions. Nowadays there are a lot of safety norms in place when certifying airports.
    We certainly hope and pray that it was the last accident .
