Karkala, Sep 12: A petrol tanker rolled into a roadside gorge at Hirgan Nellikatte near here on Thursday, September 11. The people immediately rushed with whatever utensils they could lay hands on, to collect as much petrol as possible.

After the driver lost control over the tanker that was moving to Hebri from Mangalore, it swerved away from road and rolled into the gorge, as a result of which, the tanker lock got opened and petrol started to flow out. As soon as the news spread, hundreds of people gathered on the spot with utensils, cans and whatever containers they could get, within minutes.

Police had a hard time controlling the mob that was craving for petrol. After the fire brigade arrived on the spot and started spraying water on the tanker, people dispersed. Harishchandra, a tanker staff, was injured in the accident.

Stupid people. If the vehicle was to catch fire or somebody lit a match or threw a burning beedi precious lives would have been lost. Don't forget the Nigerian crude oil pipe burst disaster where thousands of lives went up in flames.
