Bangalore: Archbishop Bernard Moras Expresses Anguish over Church Attacks

Report from Jessie Rodrigues
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Sep 22: A meeting was called by the archbishop of Bangalore Dr Bernard Moras on Monday September 22 at 9.30 am, to resolve and take effective measures with regard to the attacks on the Christian holy places, above all the attacks on the sanctity of the adoration places of Christians.

Eminent personalities, priests, nuns, media persons and people connected with the churches participated in the conference. Many people had an opportunity to share their views on the attacks and also the measures that need to be taken. It was suggested to have a core committee headed by the archbishop Moras and that interdenominational groups should visit Delhi to present the case to the Prime Minister.

It was also planned to appoint an official spokesperson to represent the Christians. The need to set up an apex body with sub bodies was also felt, to ensure that the voices of all the Christians is heard as one. At the meeting, it was realized that the Christians are lacking in unity.

This was followed by the chief minister B S Yeddyurappa’s visit of the archbishop along with home minister Dr Acharya, Katta Subramanya Naidu and some other ministers.  Bishop Moras welcomed all of them and expressed his anguish over the desecration of Christian holy places. The chief minister assured that investigations and inquiries will be conducted into the incidents. However, the media people who were present, felt the inefficiency of the government in controlling the situation. Fr  Menezes of Marianapalya, where the attack occured on Sunday September 21, was also present. He narrated the damage caused to the holy place.

Hats off to you Rev Archbishop Bernard Moras. You have really stood up for all the people who have fought for justice, borne the atrocities & had given up hopes after seeing the response from our clergies in Mangalore. At the moment what we require is individuals like you who can stand up for justice & give a befitting reply when trouble looms around us. May god bless you & shower his choicest blessings on you.

Dear Rev. Moras, You are the only leader we have to has really represented the community. Apart from you we have none, in terms of clergy or in terms of politics. We have faith in you alone and you alone will mete justice to all the people who have suffered in the recent atocities against christians. May the good Lord grant you the strength to see to it.

I appreciate & admire the capabilities of Archbishop Bernard, the way he condemned and handled these delicate situation with CM. We indeed need leaders like Archbishop Bernard who can express his feelings fearlessly to the CM. I know one such priest in our Mangalorean diocese Fr. Valerian Pinto, who too is an able leader and puts his point across very effectively with the authorities. I wish, our Bishop had acted in this way by sending a strong message to the Authorities instead of succumbing to the pressures and declaring peace with the Culprits. The main problem remains unresolved...Police Atrocities on our clergy's and innocent catholic people inside the church still un answered or not resolved yet.

I love Bishop Bernard for his courage. First time after the continuous attacks on churches a strong message of its kind was sent across to the BJP Govt by any Catholic leader. I feel now onwards we don't have to worry. Things will fall in place. Jesus was angry when situation demanded. Bishop Bernard is justified of his anger.

I happened to see the glimpse on CNN IBN how the Archbishop Moraes expressed his anguish to the CM in front of the whole press and public. Very well presented compared to the Mangalore diocese.
