Top slot for Mangaluru in elderly abuse - HelpAge India clarifies

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 23: HelpAge India, which had recently come out with a report in which Mangaluru was given top ranking in elderly abuse after concluding that old-aged people faced highest harassment here, in spite of the report being refuted vehemently by Mangalureans, clarified that it did not propose to bring disrepute to the city. Still, it stuck to the veracity of its earlier finding, which was made public on June 14 this year.

A large number of people including Senior Citizens Association, old age homes, senior citizens helpline, people's representatives, and others had expressed surprise at the findings of the organization, duly insisting that the finding is flawed. Many had urged the organization to come out with clarification, duly reversing its rating system, as the general opinion is that aged people are getting fairly good treatment in the area.

It is said that the organization had put together 5,014 aged persons drawn from cluster levels from 23 cities nationwide. Karnataka head of HelpAge India, Rekha Murthy, confirmed to a Kannada daily that the purpose of the said study was just to create awareness in the society. "218 elderly people had been selected for interview from each of these cities. Survey conducted by the organization covered categories, one which said they faced harassment, and the other which said they did not. Again, the chosen sample size was made up of 50 percent male and 50 percent female interviewees," she explained.

HelpAge had concluded that 47 percent of aged people from Mangaluru were being harassed. Disrespectful behaviour, physical abuse, utter neglect, and non-provision of financial support were some of the parameters based on which the survey was based, it is learnt.

Here, I am neither against the report nor in favor of it. However, what I feel that, HelpAge India representatives might have interviewed and taken the note of only aged, elderly people. Did they interview and discussed with children of those parents, did they interview each and every home where parents and children live together.

Do they have a solution for this ? They only submit the report to the government. Is government organizations dare to take any appropriate actions to tackle this issue. There are many evil things in the society, Alcohol, tobacco, drugs, etc. which is damaging heavily to the society and individual families. If you visit hospitals, there are huge number of cases with cancer, which are directly connected to smoking beedies, cigarettes, chewing various types of tobacco products such as pan parag, pan masala, an you name it, liver disease due to heavy consumption of alcohol. Which government is ready to ban these products, when it is generating high income.

Whether it is HelpAge India or any other organization, they are only in business in the name of charity. Is any of this organizations top leader is ready to give a single paisa for the sake of charity. It is only our money they collect in various forms and do their business. sometime in the form educational tax, cleanliness tax, and so on. day by day taxes increased but no positive utilization for the purpose the tax has been collected.

Furthermore, every individual has different level of experience and different theory, so one can not comment on entire community or group

@Peter mangalore ,elderly abuse -I find this elderly abuse can be lessend by advicing people about elderly people ,who in their old age mostly sick and many times are alone .Many times daughter in law doesnt agree what mother in law says when corrected. They want their own ways to follow than olden times.I have seen with my own eyes ,that elderly person has to sit inside when visitors come to parlour ,not to come out .certainly elderly person wants too a chat with someone.other side I have seen a mother was old ,had no control over her motion, could hardly control till she goes to wc, was too demence, son was hitting her ,with stick(Son was about 50)why she cant go to toilet ,why she doesnt listen .when someone objects him,he used to saynoone should ask him about his mother.Better here people should know about their sickness ,so that abuse lessens.

This help age india has a office in Bengaluru. The Bengaluru office is headed by a woman Rekha murthy. There are lots of cases registered against her. There are cases on her like attempt to defame the rich and the famous by registering law suits and collect protection money from them. This NGO is a total fake. Its a attempt to defame the fast growing Mangalore. No doubt.

True - it is one side of the story, and largely applicable to urban side.

In the semi urban and rural area, the story is little different. People have adopted a life style, where every small service is hired. Do not want to muddy the hands, even lower middle class.

It takes grit as well as hard work to take care of additional load, financial as well as effort. This could be one more reason why elderly are rejected.

1.Son goes to US settles there
Daughter married and busy with her family
Parents living alone in home no one cares for them
2.Son is with Parents daughter in law doesn't like mother in law and father in law as the cost of Living has gone high and price of real estate sky rocketing son cannot afford to buy a new house .So every day quarrelling is the only option for daughter in law
3.Moral values going down no one feels that it's duty to take care of parents
4.All old age homes have become commercial only
Solution: Instill moral values in our children right from their child hood

    Dr. Kamath,

I agree with your point : Instill moral values in our children right from their child hood

Let the children know the toils their parents go through. A child who sees his/her parent struggling to give them a better life, will remember it for lifelong. Keep your young children with you, don't let the boys wander and girls toil in the house (one day to be married off). Love and affection should be shared equally so should the responsibilities.

At the same time, moral values do not give us food - we must work for a living. One man's working isn't sufficient, his wife too need to work. Here arises the conflict. Earlier both parents were not working - one was at home looking after the children and the house requirements. When the DIL doesn't do what the MIL did at her time, she gets irked and the differences arise. Result is the son moves out with his wife because he still needs the money that she brings to run the household. However, where the MIL was working earlier, she supports her son's wife working and insists that they live separately so that she makes up for the lost time when she and her spouse both had to work. Yes, a difference comes up when one of the older couple is no more alive.

Therefore, let us understand the situation, HelpAge is an external body. They should be sensitive to society's anxiety, should not do reports just to gain popularity and revenue.

Mangaloreans did not give enough donation to Help Age India, that is why this negative report. I have seen many yuongesters roaming from Help Age group around Mangalore city limits in each and every flat to collect donations but most of the people refused to give donations. So they came with a report to blame Mangaloreans are the most abusive of elderly people.
Logic is simple : If you give money you are great.... If you don't you will be let down.

We should stop living in the past glory of mangalore and acknowledge the present story.

Our elderly are comparing the present to how it was and how they desire it should be.

Let us acknowledge the reality and bring in little more humanity in our thoughts and actions.

All the while, our youth is occupied with caste and religious issues fuelled by politicians.

    JD,

There is a spurt in the lifestyle that was before say.. 25 years, and now. The children of those days have grown and gone away in search of jobs while the elders who were working in Mangalore have retired and are alone at home. They can't call their children back to be with them or can join their children abroad due to either health factor or the legal requirement of their children's present country of stay.

The other version of it is, parents of 25 years back who are 50 plus now, don't adjust to their DIL's working and commanding equal respect from her spouse (consequentially asking to stay away from his old fashioned parents). They feel neglected and naturally say so to the interviewer.

I am sure the situation is similar with all other places where HelpAge took up their survey. Only surprise is, why single out Mangalore ?? Have the children of parents in other places never moved out ?
