Bhatkal: Tightened Saudi rules - families returning to hometown in droves

Daijiworld Media Network - Bhatkal (SP)

Bhatkal, Jul 9: After new rules which laid emphasis on favouring the locals were enforced in Saudi Arabia about six months back, Indian families are finding it hard to comply with them. Several families have been shifting their bases back to their hometowns. During the last one week, ten families from the town have come back from Saudi Arabia.

As per an estimate, about 5,000 persons from here live in Saudi Arabia. Most of them are pursuing non-technical employment and their earnings are limited. A majority of them have settled down in Al Khobar, Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam, Al Jubail etc. While many of them have taken their families along, there are many who have gone alone and their families, which are dependent on the income of these people, live here.

Saudi government has tightened rules as per which businesses like jewellery, textiles and some others cannot be run by people from other countries. Every foreign national in Saudi has to pay monthly fee of 200 riyals, and identity cards for foreigners, which cost 550 riyals in the past, now cost 5,500 riyals. Hence, not only the employees but those who have started their own businesses there are finding it impossible to continue and therefore returning to India permanently.

The returning families are now looking at the government here to come to their rescue as they find it hard to find an employment or settle down here after losing all contact for many years.

@Rakesh Pune,Would like to correct you.Congress never forced people to go to Gulf.It was their own wish to go out of India to earn better and support family. Were you too forced to go to Pune or went with own wish? Now that you are telling people to come to your fields to work?First start working self there to show others a example.Dont moke people who just lost job .I saw just few days back a history about SA.and was astauned what is SA today and was.Today oilfields are not earning much as before, they have to see future ,and their own people.Thatswhy is this rules.I dont want to say much. But when I hear now the new rules about familys and taxes,it is really hard.Anyway every country has its own way to rule. Now Gulf countrys have learnt to tighten .When someone is good in technic ,and learnt ,there is a chance in Germany now even in IT branch,Nursing too.

Girish, I have worked in the Gulf Countries for 35 years & I know the situation there very well.
Some commentators r using some words like slaves, bar dancers etc. without knowing the difference in the profession these students were involved with when they were in foreign countries to earn their pocket money. They do not realise that it reflects their own character & upbringing.

Under 4 years of this government even the majority is insecure and scared. This will all change from May 2019 when peace and security and good will return to the country. Five years of curse will end. Bhakts better start looking for pakodas.

GCC life for Indian subcontinent expats is near to end now. Even in Bahrain we have seen different types of price rises, higher penalties for silliest traffic offenses etc. Believe it or not, I had paid 450BD (around 81500 INR) last year alone just for crossing 100 speed limit area by 10 to 20%. The electricity bills are going higher month by moth, now the Tax is about to launch in Bahrain as well. Now its impossible for us to save money like 10 years ago I/we used to do.

But as per FEMA rules once you have a residency stamped on you passport and you stay more than 6 months and more then you are an NRI. Even if you save less than your friends in india still you are considered a rich guy...and if with so much difficulty you manage to keep your family with you then eventually your kids have to pay NRI category fees equal to what rich businessmen and industrialists pay here...

    It is a sad case.

For over 30 years, for many Indians, the GCC had become an extension of India. With better income, of course.

In some cases, a whole generation has been born and grown in GCC, with India as just an occasional holiday destination.

The GCC is on a significant course change. This will eject many from the region, and they will find it difficult to adjust to the new realities.

My recommendation: do not wait for any help from the Government. Instead, join some technical schools to learn motor mechanics, plumbing, electrician trade, etc.
