Udupi: Self-help groups watch Prime Minister's interaction programme

Udupi, Jul 13: Over 60 members of self-help group members from the district watched the programme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interaction at V S Acharya meeting hall at DC office here on Thursday, July 12.

Three LED screens had been set up at the DC office for the purpose.

Nayana, district level project director, said that NRLM (National Rural Livelihoods Mission) had directed them to screen Prime Minister’s Interaction programme, with a view to motivate the self-help group (SHG) members to take up initiative to become financially independent. Federations have been formed in 34 panchayats in Karkala taluk, out of which two have got revolving fund of ten lac rupees each, he said. They have trained eight panchayats in a week. The GPLF will move towards forming ward-level federations. 55 panchayats have been identified in Kundapur and Udupi taluks for this year for the formation of federations, it is gathered.

Over 24 Municipal Community Resource Person (MCRP) have been selected for monitoring GLPF and WLPF. They have formed federations during the year 2016-17.

Under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, 425 persons in the 18-35 age group have been trained in three years. They have made placement for 244 people, Nayana said.

Shyamala Kundar, Udupi district coordinator for self help groups said, "The Pradhan Manthri Jan-Dhan Yojana will help to empower women. This scheme has helped people to open bank accounts and to become economically strong. If a woman becomes strong financially, her family will also becomes better placed. Many banks are also going to the doorstep of the consumers to provide loans. Modi's interaction programme will motivate many women, particularly those who want to become independent," she stated.

After the interaction programme, Jyothi, a member of SHG said, “Earlier we did not have the banking experience. Now we have got knowledge of deposit, credit and cheque, online. This programme inspired me a lot'.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that self-help groups are playing a very important role in the rural areas of the country especially for small entrepreneurs and working class.

Interacting with the members of SHGs comprising more than 10 million women across the country, through video conferencing facility, Prime Minister said that SHGs form the basis of economic growth for the poor especially the women.

He said, the SHGs are making women socially and economically strong. He said, for women empowerment, the most important requirement is to provide them the opportunity to recognize their own powers, abilities and skills. The government of India is planning to design GEM, means Government E Marketing. If entrepreneurs get registered their names in E-Marketing, it will help to nationwide business.

Modi said, "Most of the successful women have come from poor background. They are well aware of difficulties. Their life itself is an inspiration to become independent woman entrepreneurs. They need a right platform to exhibit their skills.

He further said that Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, there is a target of reaching millions of rural poor families.

The Prime Minister said, "Their hard work and courage has made them so strong. Women are working in large numbers in every sector and the country's agricultural sector and dairy sectors cannot be imagined without contributions from women,”

He concluded his interaction by saying that those who did not get a chance to share details of journey of their business, can send stories through Prime Minister Modi App.
