Mangaluru, Jul 14: Because of extremely heavy downpour, the old building which used to house Ullal railway station near here in the past, which was very old, crashed to the ground. The building is learnt to be over a century old.
The passengers luckily escaped from likely catastrophe by a whisker.
The building was housing the canteen of the railway station till sometime back. Taking into account the precarious condition of the building, under instructions from higher officers, it had been shifted from here three months ago. After the construction of a new building, station master's office and control room had been shifted to the new building from some years back.
The building, constructed during the British era, was approximately 125 years old. It was not being used by railways. Some passengers waiting for trains however continued to use this building as waiting room. Drivers of auto rickshaws from the nearby rickshaw park also made use of the building to take rest. However, no one was inside when the roof of the building came down crashing.
Railway officials said that senior officials have been informed about the incident and that they would be visiting the spot on Saturday.
