Puttur: Polya bomb explosion case - 81-year-old accused arrested

Puttur, Oct 28: The city police have at last succeeded in arresting the culprit who had kept bombs around a house at Polya, near Kabaka here, with the intention of exploding it.

The arrested accused is Babu (81), a resident of Arkula Pinakat of Kottayam district in the state of Kerala. The accused was absconding since October 16, when the explosion took place and the police were frantically searching for him. He was arrested from Alakkod of Kannur district on Friday, August 26.

This shocking incident had taken place at 2.15 am on October 16 in which the owner of the house Narayana Prasad escaped with minor injuries. However, his wife Shalini was severely injured. Both her hamstrings were damaged badly. In addition, she received injuries on her left hand and forehead. Shalini is recuperating in a hospital at Mangaluru.

Various suspicions were expressed with regards to the incident. As per the information Babu, the accused, had given Rs 70,000 to Narayan Prasad, the owner of the house. Narayana Prasad had returned only Rs 20,000 to Babu and threatened him for asking the remainder of the amount. Babu has told the police that because of this grudge, he had kept the explosives around the house in order to blast it. Police are on the search for the person who has supplied explosives to Babu. The arrested accused is produced to the JMFC court in the town and he is remanded to judicial custody of 14 days.

The arrested accused is known by several names like Babu, Balu, Baletta, Devasya, Sebastian, Kuttacchan and Mohammed. He is originally from Kerala. He is married and has children also. However, he has deserted his wife and children and used to live a nomadic life. Babu used to change his name according to the situation and place where he used to get settled down. This information is unearthed by the police during the preliminary investigation.

Police had conducted extensive search for Babu in Puttur, Sullia, Kushalnagar, Hunasur of Karnataka state and Kasaragod, Adoor, Kannur, Alakkodu and Ernakulam of Kerala.

Puttur city police inspector Timmappa Naika is conducting the investigation under the guidance of DySP Srinivas, SP Dr Ravikante Gowda and additional SP Sajit. Sub-inspector Ajay Kumar led the team which conducted the operation. The team included ASI Duggappa Gowda and personnel like Jayarama, Scaria, Damodar, Jagadish, Rajesh S, Manjunath, Cholappa, Hemavati, Geeta, Revathi, Sampath and Divakar.
