Mangaluru: KSRTC to begin operating buses from airport to city

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 30: Just like the bus services being run by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) between Bengaluru airport and various parts of that city, KSRTC plans to begin its services from the airport to the city. Initially, five such buses have been planned to be made operational.

It may be recalled that during his recent visit to the international airport here, state chief secretary, T M Vijay Bhaskar, had instructed KSRTC officials to operate buses from the airport to different parts of the city and the district. In this background, the KSRTC officials here have launched a survey for the same.

The KSRTC officials are holding discussions with the airport officials about the areas to which movement of passengers from the airport is more, and at what time the availability of passengers is good, and which timings would suit the people. The discussions might take a week, and a final shape to the plan might emerge by this week end.

KSRTC had introduced two buses to the airport from KSRTC bus stand here. The buses which were operated for a short period were taken off the road, citing poor collection. KSRTC already holds permit to run KSRTC Volvo buses from the airport to Bhatkal via Udupi and Manipal, but timings are yet to be fixed by the regional transport authority at Udupi. Once the authority gives the timing, two Volvo buses will begin to ply on this route. It is thought that places like Bhatkal, Manipal and Udupi can feed more passengers to the airport here because of distance factor and availability of businesspersons there.

For the present, Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission might be run from the airport to Kavoor, Kankanady, State Bank, Lalbhag and Morgan Gates, as per the current estimates, as the depot here is short of Volvo buses. KSRTC is also thinking about the practicability of running buses from airport to Puttur, Sullia, Bantwal and Beltangady, it is learnt.

Taxi operators will not allow smooth operation of this service. Taxi wallahs are charging Rs. 700 to 800 for covering 20 Kilometers to the city where aggregate taxi operators are ready for Rs. 250/-. Taxi operators are acting like goondas and they wont allow healthy competition for the benefit of air passengers and public. It will meet the same fate of auto stand in Mangalore junction.

@Sethu mangalore, one side you are right.other side taxis are waiting sometime for long, paying entree fee ,their petrol money too should be paid.other side nowadays private taxis are more.many have own cars relatives or friends reach them or bring. In this compitation who will survive or goes under will show soon. Some taxis will really take you out as a goose.

    1. Go for short chassis buses like BEST in Mumbai used for for point-to-point service.
    2. Let the step height be reasonable; don't make elderly to kneel on steps and climb.
    3. Duplicate concept used by KSRTC/BMTC buses from BIAL airport to City for luggage handling.
    4. Introduce periodic passes; some airport staff may use it if convenient.

City Bus services in Kuwait use this concept with limited stop facilities and have not withdrawn any till date. Borrow their business concept to be successful.

Good luck to this venture; your services will determine customers' (passengers') patronage.

This move is overdue. Govt has so far been thinking that citizens can be taken for granted. Almost all cities in the world have good public transport system for airports. Poor people travel by air to different countries for earning their livelyhood. One cannot take for granted that NRIs are rich. In fact they dont even have the ticket money for major part of their journey. They are being cheated by taxi unions here in India because there is no bus service.
Even or middle class people who cannot travel by bus to Bangalore, Mumbai etc. spending 25% of airfare for local transport is criminal waste. Let the buses take all people and let the taxi owners find some other bakras.

KSRTC starts a new service with lot of enthusiasm. However, as time passes they outsource it to private operators. Same happened with Mangalore to Mumbai multi axle Volvos. This private contractor runs this service only during holiday season.

The following steps will be good to ksrtc and passengers:
    1. Shuttle services from Airport to Kavoor and Bajpe. Passengers can then take other transport. These could be available every 30 minutes.
    2. Bus services from Airport to KSRTC Mangalore. Passengers can then easily onward get connected. Frequency 30 minutes.

These buses could also pick other passengers , if need be.

What is good to a passenger should be good to everyone. All the best.

For the people arriving from their destination, the airport should have clear marking of paths leading to Buses, taxis and private cars. All three should not be mixed. Otherwise this may create chaos, quarrels. The purpose is not to fight with taxis. System should be designed in such a way that it should automatically bring discipline among the users of the system and should become convenient for the users.

Mangalore Airport is one of the few airports that is not served by public transport. Why should a resident pay a fare of 150 to 500 to taxi or rickshaw for a distance of less than 10km ? Climbing the hill is the worse part and the bus should terminate right inside the airport parking area. Follow the example of Bengaluru and other airports. Welcome the move !!

    Sorry..
It is minimum Rs 225 from Bangalore airport to the Bangalore city.
But the distance is more than 30 Kms.
It cannot be Rs 100 or Rs 200 because that would not cover even the
    drivers' salary and diesel cost.

Me and friends took a service bus (which are plenty) to Airport Bus stand on Mangalore-Bajpe road and then hiked the hill pulling the trolley luggage bags which took us 25mins walking. It was fun.
Sometimes we need to realize that walking has existed for millennia.

To and from destinations prominently display the boards indicating the Proper timings keeping view of the time needed at the AIRPORT reporting timings. This includes travel time. These buses may also pick up DIRECT passengers to the destination only from the important stops and JUNCTIONS on the way. These buses should have prominent identity and should be SUPER FAST.Charges may be double than an ORDINARY bus fare. More views be also considered form passengers.

Travellers could use the facilities, rather depend on taxi alone. Nice work.
    Looking forward for more inputs.
Ksrtc, airport authority, and the people should coordinate,n make it a successful one.
Rather empty buses running for the month and seeking for closure of service.

There is no doubt about its success because the buses pass through Bondel/Kavoor. So, 17 and 47 can be extended further till the airport. If not airport passengers, people till Bajpe can travel to/from the locations.
