Mumbai: 8-year-old drowns in open manhole in desolate area


Mumbai, Nov 15 (TOI): An eight-year-old boy drowned in an open manhole near his house in Nalasopara on Tuesday. The body of the child, Rishab Vishwakarma, who had been missing since Tuesday evening, was found floating in the manhole filled with water.

A resident of Hritik Apartment in Vijay Laxmi Nagar, Nalasopara (east), Rishab had gone out to play at around 4.30 pm. When he did not return till late evening, his parents launched a search. A missing complaint was filed at Tuling police station.

On Wednesday morning, the police were informed about a body floating in the manhole located at an isolated spot in Vasantnagri.

The body was fished out and identified as that of Rishab, a class three student. The body has been sent for an autopsy. A case of accidental death has been registered. The police said it is not known who left the manhole in an isolated spot open. Locals said the manhole has been open since the monsoon for passage of flooded water from the area.
