Mangaluru, Jan 6: MLC Ivan D'Souza announced that he would hold a day-long fast in front of the Gandhi Park at Town Hall in the city on January 8 against the merger of Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda.

In a press meet held at congress office on Sunday, January 6, Ivan said “Modi-led union government and its cabinet betrayed the people of Dakshina Kannada by merging our Vijay Bank with Gujarat-based Bank of Baroda. By this they have questioned our self-respect and projected us as fools. Our representative of Parliament sat mum at the time of bank merging procedures. But we will not allow our bank to be sold to someone. I will sit in front of Gandhi statue and perform one-day fasting.

"Vijaya Bank is only one bank which declared the dividends to its customers in the year 2017. It started with a vision of uplifting the farmers and the poor. This bank has played a vital role in the growth of our district. It has given employment for thousands of youths. But our MP is not aware of all this. He is not ready to speak a word against the merger. It is suspected that he had a major role in the merging procedure.

"The public of the district is against the meger of Vijaya Bank with the Gujarath-based bank which is under a huge loss. Their only demand is to free the Vijaya bank from the procedures immediately. If it is not done, in the upcoming days there will be a series of protests.

“On January 10 in front all branches of Vijaya Bank Congress party will hold protest. The employees of bank will also participate in this protest because it is question of their livelihood," Ivan said.

Prior to the press meet, cheques worth Rs five lac from the Chief Ministers relief fund were distributed to beneficiaries.

Holding one day fast by Mr. Ivan will not change the ground reality. He should be proactive and educate the voters of undivided Canara of BJP's ruling.
It should go to the common man and ask them what development 'smart city' of Mangalore has got under BJP ruling since 1991 straight for 25 years.
In another hand, BJP has hired the call centers and calling voters and asking to save 'Hinduism' to elect BJP again.
In my opinion, Mangaloreans are fed up with the communal politics of BJP. They wanted change but Congress or no other party is having the better option other than antique Poojari.

it is a public sector bank and not run by Bunt community. Its head office was shifted to Bangalore from Mangalore in 1969 (even before nationalisation). Recently, when State Bank of Mysore merged with SBI, why everybody was quiet. The number of shares for shareholders of other two banks with of merged entity (BOB) is already finalised. All this fasting is nothing but a drama and comments such as "insult to bunt community" does not make any sense.

Ivan , everybody in and around Mangalore understand your cheap quality drama. If you are so concerned the pride of local community , then why did you participated and presided the Jayanti event of Tipu the Butcher????
Secondly when Bunts community including those who were fighting with tooth and nail to rename the Century old LHHR to one unknown outsider, are not interested, then why do you have the pain
Thirdly, don't be an JPH of Mangalore only for the sake of Chair, it won't get by cheap quality Mimics but only by Hardwork in favour of the poor and needy !!!!!

These politicians having full prior knowledge of what is happening, now making drama of fasting or whatsoever doesn't benefit anyone. Once the cabinet decides it's final, it may take years, but will not be abolished or cancelled. Our country needs strong banks but small in numbers,
I think these politicians should hold fasting for the missing fishermen, to stop farmer suicides in the state.
One small road was not allowed to make in the name of Vijaya Bank founder by these politicians in Mangalore, how come suddenly they started to love Vijaya Bank????????????????????????????

The action by Ivan is purely stunt for advertisement. He knows that the decision taken is sure to be implemented and cabinet has already approved the proposed merger of three bank one is Vijaya bank. If he had so much love towards Vijaya bank, he would have supported the renaming if LHH road to Mulki Sunset Ram Shetty road for which local admin had accorded sanction But because communalism I filtered in the issue the event was stalked. Now sudden love for Vijaya bank is surprising Anyhow he is too late in this case and proposed merger will happen

No one should worry about the merger of Vijaya Bank as in the last election all the bunt community has voted for BJP.

Let them get that resolved through the nalayak MP, who also belongs to their own caste.

why congress is interfering in this matter I do not understand. No statement by BJP and the nalayak MP at all?
But still people will vote for BJP in the coming LOk Sabha elections, because we are more concerned about the caste than the development or issues?

    Abdulla

Bharath is not ruled based on religions - its a democratic country.
The bunt community has nothing to do with which a bank anymore. It was just founded by one and was meant to benefit the needful. One socialist prime minister by the name of Mrs Gandhi decided to nationalize it for her own benefit and got nothing out of it. People have still kept it going and kept it profitable. By working hard, even though some of the previous Chairman's have looted it.

You probably are thinking you're in one of the Gulf countries where there is different rules for different religions probably wish it was the same in this country. I'm glad you feel that way in the peaceful land of Udupi. Kindly get educated about the world and remember that all human beings are one.

    Hi Hindu
Anyways ,my comment is irrelevant to Vijaya Bank or Ivan.
It is just an observation in reaction to your comments
Being in Gulf for last 20 years ,i would like to add a truthful observation which many of you may not know.
Most of the Gulf rich countries are not really bothered about expats irrespective of their religion. They really dont care.Frankly, the expats are trying to impress them by showing their deep attachment to religious preachings. But locals are getting more liberal due to western influence.Friday Avenue mall of Kuwait or Dubai mall visit you can witness that.Only 3rd world country people are still in Stone age.it is due to poverty and illiteracy
Hence government should try to educate them to come out from clutches of fundamentalists..

Lot of your Penguins , especially the less literate ones have their accounts in Vijaya Bank. It's because you only find helping hands when they ask " Anna , undhu cheque baredh korle anna, undhu form fill malth korle anna". Even our managers help them in filling forms , same people against whom you are speeding communal Venom.
Talking about Caste based vote bank.... thum kare tho Chamathkaar, Hum Kare to balathkaar!. Don't worry, no Bunts are worried about Merger. Despite Dongis whatsap campaign spreading roumors. VOTE THO HUM MODI KO HI DENGE.
