Udupi, Jan 6: "The turning of water of sea into green colour is a natural phenomenon. This goes back to normal within a week or ten days. But it is dangerous for the fish," said environment expert, retired principal, Dr N A Madhyastha.

The water of sea in areas of Kaup, Malpe, Ucchila, Ermalu and Padubidri has turned green and also gives a foul smell. This situation is prevailing from four to five days and the fishermen are anxious about this phenomenon.

This phenomenon is called Red Tide. When the effluents from chemical factories like Phosphate and Nitrate and soap enters into the water, it acts like fertilizer to the algae. This algae which turns poisonous flows to the shore due to the wind. There is a possibility that fishes which consume this algae may die due to poisoning. If this chemical gets mixed into the air, it leads to lung diseases like asthma and bronchitis.
