Puttur, Jan 24: Two young men who shattered tube lights and CFL bulbs which were serving as streetlights at Bappalige were caught on account of CCTV cameras. The incident happened near Bappalige within the limits of the city municipality here.

12 tubelights and two CFL bulbs which had been fitted between Bappalige to Gumpakallu were found to have broken into pieces and their pieces were scattered on the road. No one knew who did it. The municipality filed complaint at the police station, seeking to check footage of CCTV cameras and find out the culprits,.

The police who checked the CCTV footage, identified two young men who were responsible for this destructive act, on Wednesday. Both have confessed to their mistake. They had been to a place near the town on the night of January 20 to take part in a festival and when coming back home early morning the next day, both pelted stones at the street lights. This was captured by the CCTV cameras.

After the police began investigating, the parents of the boys met municipal commissioner, Roopa Shetty and apologized for the mistake. The municipal commissioner told them that she is helpless as public property has been damaged. She promised not to register a case if the loss is made good. Out of the estimated loss of Rs 17,000 the parents remitted Rs 10,000 to the municipality on Wednesday and promised to deposit the remaining amount within ten days. They also executed a bond for the same, the municipal commissioner said.
