Bengaluru, Jan 31: On Wednesday January 30, the state government told the high court that it will, with immediate effect, reverse its July 14, 2017 decision in which it had justified its decision to make only the Muslim community members as chairpersons of Karnataka State Minorities Commission.

A Shivamogga-based advocate, B Vinod, had filed public interest litigation in the high court, seeking directions to the government to give the post of the chairperson of the said commission to even other minority groups by rotation. He pointed out that the government has been appointing only Muslims as the head of the commission.

The petition came up for consideration before the division bench of the high court comprising Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice B M Shyamprasad, on Wednesday. During the arguments, the advocate for the government informed the bench the government's decision to reverse its earlier decision.

The bench, which recorded this statement, disposed off the public interest litigation after passing direction to the department of minority welfare to consider the plea of the petitioner afresh on the issue of giving the post of the chairperson of the minorities commission to all the communities falling under this category through a system of rotation, and to take legal measure as may be necessary to implement this decision.
