Udupi: District now driven by no-nonsense women leaders, officials

Udupi, Feb 22: The coastal belt of Karnataka is always known to have more women voters as compared to men. Since the last some years, the district has been witnessing able women officers heading zilla panchayat, district administration, revenue divisions, and other departments.

Now, women have been heading administrative machinery, law and order, taluk administration and political arena of the district. Women officials are placed in strategic positions.

The present deputy commissioner of the district is Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, who is known to be a strict officer. Now, Nisha James has been made the district superintendent of police. With this, the two most important departments in the district are headed by lady officers.

Recently, Sindhu B Rupesh took charge as the chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat here. Vidyakumari has been discharging duties as the additional deputy commissioner. This Lok Sabha constituency is represented by Shobha Karandlaje. A woman, Jayamala, happens to be the district in-charge minister.

All the three taluk panchayats in the district are headed by women. Nalini Pradeep is the president of Udupi taluk panchayat, Malini Shetty is the president of Karkala taluk panchayat, and Shyamala V Kunder is the president of Kundapur taluk panchayat. Sheela K Shetty is the vice president of the zilla ppanchayat here.

District health and family welfare department is headed now by Dr Rohini, while Bhuvaneshwari is the deputy director of the department of horticulture. Gracy Gonsalves is the deputy director of women and child welfare department. Even among gram panchayats, most of the presidents are women.

Therefore, whenever public functions are held in the district, women power is in full display, something about which the people of the district need to be proud of.
