Udupi, Mar 10: Dr Shridhara B S, joint director of Department of Ayush unveiled the fourth statue of Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda at Bhavaprakash in Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Ayurveda, Udupi here on Saturday, March 9.

The programme was jointly organised by Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Ayurveda and Hospital in association with Sandu Pharmaceuticals Ltd Mumbai.

Delivering the inaugural address Dr Shridhara B S said, “Around 7.25% of Ayurvedic graduates are practicing their concerned system after their study. There is question whether we are lagging behind? For many people, studying Ayurveda is not by chance, but by choice. They choose this subject as second option.”

“Once you get into the study, you should strive to achieve success in the system. The ones who entered this profession, made it as their choice. It is a duty of a teacher to build confidence among students to choose Ayurveda as their future career,” he advised.

“Now yoga is separated from the Ayurveda, but the knowledge is required for Ayurveda students. There is a need for counseling and one should develop good communication skills. People have very less knowledge about this field. Hence there is need to create awareness about the subject. There is need for documentation, research work,
and more and more textbooks have to get published. They should share knowledge with each other, only then people will gain understanding and only then this system will survive,” he said.

Shashank B Sandu, director, Sandu Pharmaceuticals Ltd appreciating the campus and the facilities provided said, “SDM is epitome of all science, education, health, happiness, research and more.”

Sandu said the first statue of Lord Dhanvantari was installed in 1948 in Assam. There are 30 such statues installed in India. Here in SDM, this is the second statue in Karnataka, made of Plaster of Paris.

He requested the students who are passing out shortly to not go for other sectors after their PG in Ayurveda. “Just go for practicing. Do not let this opportunity go waste,” he said.
