Mangalore: Sand Mining will be Curbed: Palemar

MANGALORE, Feb 22: District in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar said on Saturday that a special squad would be formed to control sand mining in river beds.

Mr. Palemar told presspersons here that the squad would be empowered to levy fines up to Rs. 1 lakh on those transporting sand illegally. He complimented Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa for allocating Rs. 100 crore for fishing harbours in the coastal region, Rs. 10 crore for dredging in Karwar port, and Rs. 20 crore for prevention of sea erosion. He said projects worth about Rs. 9 crore would be launched and schemes worth Rs. 1.28 crore would be distributed among 3,009 beneficiaries on Sunday.
