Bengaluru: Input chief of TV channel arrested for blackmailing doctor

Bengaluru, Mar 20: Hemant Kashyap, chief of input department of a popular TV channel was arrested by the Sadashivanagar police of the city on the accusation of extorting Rs 5 lac from Dr Raman Rao and demanding for Rs 50 lac more.

Hemant had threatened the doctor that he has his private video in his possession and will telecast the same unless the doctor pays him the ransom. Dr Raman Rao had complained about the same to the police. The police arrested Hemant, while he came to collect the money from the victim doctor. This information was given by D Devraj, DCP of central department.

Dr Raman Rao is the family doctor of famous Kannada actor and singer Dr Rajkumar family also. He runs a nursing home in Sadashivanagar in the city. The footage of Hemant receiving Rs 5 lac ransom from the doctor was also captured in the CCTV of the nursing home.

DCP Devraj said, "We checked the CCTV footage after Dr Raman Rao lodged a complaint with us. Hemant, who had visited the nursing home thrice, had taken Rs 2 lac on two occasions and Rs 1lac on the third occasion. This is clearly evident in the footage."

"Hemant, who had approached the doctor, had kept a further demand for Rs 50 lac. He was called to the nursing home and arrested red0handed," explained Devraj.

DCP Devraj further said, "Manjunath, reporter of another news channel has also extorted money from the doctor after blackmailing him. He is also listed as an offender in the case. He is absconding at present. The footage of Manjunath receiving money is also captured on the CCTV of the nursing home of Dr Raman Rao. Manjunath had visited the nursing home with Hemant to collect the extortion amount. Both the accused have blackmailed the doctor by taking the names of various news channels. We also have information of more reporters having blackmailed the doctor."

It is learnt that accused Hemant has threatened the police for arresting him. According to the sources, Hemant threatened the police and said, "I know the senior officers of the police department. Release me right now. You cannot do anything." However, police did not budge for his threats, arrested him and took him to the police station.

DCP Devraj also requested the public that at present only Dr Raman Rao has registered a complaint against Hemant. If the accused has blackmailed others, they can come forward and register the complaint.
