Mangaluru, Apr 5: A heartwarming deed of a little boy in Mizoram is winning the internet across the country.

Six-year-old Derek C L has become an overnight internet sensation for his kind-hearted deed in saving the life a little chicken that he accidentally hit.

Derek C L who ran his bicycle over his neighbour's chicken by mistake, immediately took it to hospital for treatment with all the money he had.

His innocent act posted by a family friend on internet has won hearts and became viral in a short time.

Derek was felicitated at St Pio School on Thursday, April 4 by headmaster Fr Stuart Prajwal Fernandes who hails from Mangaluru, in the presence of Derek's parents. The school is in Sairang, 20 kilometre from Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram.

Derek is studying in the first standard, his father Dhiraj Chettry is a policeman and mother Lalnunpuii is a housewife.

St Pio School is being run by the order of Friars Minor Capuchin priests of Holy Trinity province which is headquartered in Bengaluru.

Speaking to daijiworld, Fr Stuart Prajwal Fernandes said, "On Tuesday evening after his school, he was riding his bicycle near to his house. Unfortunately, a small chick came in his way and got injured. Afraid for its life, he took the chick to his house and asked his father to treat it, but he was not taken seriously. So he rushed to the hospital with a 10 rupee note, which was given to him by his parents as pocket money. The boy was not aware that the chick was dead.

"The school decided to felicitate the boy for his kind-hearted and responsible gesture. Even while felicitating he was totally unaware why he was being felicitated. A strong message is being spread with his act, that we should respect everyone and show humanity towards not only humans but also to the animals," said Fr Stuart Fernandes.

Indeed, sometimes, children teach adults the most important lessons in life.

Excellent act by this little child. Children are pure, innocent and kindhearted. They represent all the good human qualities we can say God's qualities which suppose to have in every human being. But unfortunately most of the time humans are not. But with this act of this little boy we adults can learn a lesson of kind heart, love to all creatures, purity, morality, equality, helping nature and so on......list is big. Keep it up little boy. Hats up to him and his proud parents.

I really appreciate Fr Stuart Prajwal Fernandes for recognizing the boy and honouring him. This boy's deed really touched my heart. The compassion, love for a fellow living being and the presence of mind are all appreciable. On the other side the boy also reminds us of how uncompassionate are we and how cocooned our life around ourselves. We do not think about the suffering of other animals at all. We just treat animals and birds as food. We do not understand what goes within those animals when they are being butchered.
I could write pages about what this little boy has reminded us of. But since it is Saturday, I will have to check the marinating for chicken and mutton, we are having barbeque lunch today!

Do vegetables shed from the mother plant and then you pick them to use as food ? You are detaching it from the plant which is also cruel.

Let people live as per they eating habits, don't dictate your philosophy on them.

Jennifer, you are still not grown up. Mother plant is left while plucking fruits. It keeps on yielding, till its season ends. vegetables plucked from plants can also be sown to give fruit or vegetable bearing plant. Can you show me the same on animals which have been slaughtered? How many eggs did you get after culling hen or cock? How many lambs did you get after cutting goat or lamb? Understand the nature. You can be lead a peaceful life without consuming live animals. If you feel you can kill animals birds or insects ,you can visit anyone's home and trap cockroaches, lizards, housefly, mosquitoes etc and drink as much soup of it .We are feeling disgusted to kill even a mosquito.

When my belly is hungry, I do not care, whether the food is vegetarian or non veg. But while cutting/butchering animals, one should make sure, it is not tortured but instantly butchered.

I Madya Pradesh alone, more than 2.5 crores cows are reared and all are not milk giving. If 1 crores is used for meat, state can benefit more than Rs. 40,000 crores minimum income. Up keep this animals cost, big money for the poor agriculturist and burden to the State.

Compassion is defined as being sensitive to the needs of people and animals. Knowledge gained in school is only one goal of education. The primary goals of education should be enabling students to gain knowledge and moral values... so you had kept fr stuwart.... all the best for future

Rita, what you said is really right. Children hit with intentions or for fun. Adults for eating purpose. They rob, ill treat, dump in the car in a most cruel way. Let all of us learn lesson from this cute boy. Keep water in the vessels in your garden.. If possible try keeping some grains. If they are happy we too are happy. Love nature.
